Katmai will mop the floor with any K6 in 3D games, unfortunately. They are competitive in other apps though. The most K6 optimized 3D game is probably Quake 2 if you get the AMD written 3Dnow patch. It should beat Katmai there. This may be the best use of 3dnow.

486 is definitely slower. Pentium passes V1000 by at some clock though. The problem with Verite on a 486 however is that Verite needs good PCI DMA transfer support to perform well and most 486s definitely do not have that. Some Pentium boards didn't either. BTW, Voodoo1 only has partial triangle …

I suppose everyone has their own tolerance, but I can barely stand web browsing on a 5x86 160. I'd only use that hardware with DOS. Windows is useful for network access though (but sadly 9x can't access Vista/7 shares).

The Ultra Extreme was one of those reactionary products. NV wanted to equate to X800XT PE which came out after 6800 U. ATI was killing 6800 U in a few games but losing in others especially OpenGL games.

I ran Jedi Knight on my 486. I'd say that if you want to do that you at least want a 3D card that has good image quality. I had a Voodoo3 working with the oldest drivers (newer drivers BSOD). You can definitely put a PCI video card in. The IGP might not disable properly though, if I remember right. You may need to disable it in Windows. My sis had a Celeron i810 box way back and I put a PCI Radeon in for her. She actually played Morrowind on that.
