Compiling for an EeePC (Celeron M) : Results

I've spent a few hours compiling DOSBOX. I have a EeePC 900 and wanted to see if I get get a bit more speed out of the little 900MHz Celeron M inside it. I've only compiled DOSBOX one other time, years ago, so I needed to relearn how to do it. The wiki and some forum threads here were invaluable. I …

Re: 3D cards in 486s

Don't forget that the 486 L2 cache, if there even is one, shares the processor bus with everything else. It's the same with a Pentium, but that 64-bit, 66MHz front-side bus gives a lot more headroom than the usual 25/33 MHz 32-bit 486 bus. And Pentiums usually have pipelined burst cache vs. plain …

Re: 3D cards in 486s

Has anyone else here attempted such feat? Is it even feasible? Are third-party drivers a bad idea for any possible modern CPU function overhead taking over? Ran a Voodoo3 in a 486 once. I had to go to some older drivers because they'd apparently started using Pentium instructions in later versions. …

Re: Best AudioPCI card?

I've read that the midi wavetable is non functional in pure DOS, haven't tested it myself though (yet) what I do know is that the SbPro mode works in poure dos with the aid of the special init software that's a pafrt of the driver package that get's installed in Windows For the old Monster Sounds? …

Re: Best AudioPCI card?

Yeah vxd drivers are always best in Win9x. Lower CPU usage and fewer issues. I don't really know if ES1370 is better than the others. It's the only chip I've used. If the newer chips are worse, that would be ugly stuff. :) I forgot one other quirk I've seen with these cards; they may or may not play …
