actually ISA has been replaced by the "LPC" bus (low pin count). It uses a lot fewer traces than ISA did but is compatible sorta.

Yup you got the right one. The problem is if you'd bought anything newer (i.e. the majority of AWE32/SB16s), the DB wouldn't work right. Any card that claims SBPro compatibility that isn't an SBPro is likely only fully compatible with an SBPro 2.0 (which includes SB 1.5 and SB 2.0 compatibility.) It won't be compatible with a game that takes full advantage of an SBPro 1.0's FM capabilities. AWE32s, PnP SB16, or SB16s without true …

CL 542x is actually quite fast in DOS. I upgraded from a Trident 8900C to the Diamond Speedstar Pro (5426) and it was very noticeably faster. I could run TIE Fighter SVGA with that CL chip. I imagine it's unique to every game. I believe though that many probably fall back to plain DS3D sound placement. Maybe EAX2 emulation. Some audio chips do EAX2 emulation (Realtek, for example). EAX 3+ aren't open standards like EAX2.

It means it won't sound right, most likely. A3D 1.0 isn't nearly as neat as 2.0 anyway. Lots of games use EAX higher than 2.0. EAX is by far the most popular standard and is supported by almost every modern game. EAX 3 on up adds more than just new reverb too. It does obstructions, for example. …

There aren't any cards that do A3D 2.0 as well as a Vortex 2. Creative's cards wrap A3D 1.x to EAX.

Voodoo3's lack of real AGP support is also a plus though. The cards are very lenient about what board/chipset they run on, unlike many many other 3d cards. Voodoo3's 3D should be more than adequate for older games. If it isn't fast enough you aren't playing games that really fit in the VOGON …
