Re: Keep DBs off SB16s!!

in PC Emulation
Yup you got the right one. The problem is if you'd bought anything newer (i.e. the majority of AWE32/SB16s), the DB wouldn't work right. So I think it is worth looking into just what is the best card for DBs and DOS games. SB16 is just not a reliable selection, and its sound quality is rather bad ( …

Re: Keep DBs off SB16s!!

in PC Emulation
I am using a CH Flightstick Pro in conjunction with the Yamaha DB-50XG daughterboard that is attached to my SB16 (CT-1740). So far, I have had excellent results playing Descent 1 in pure DOS. However, playing Tie Fighter and Extreme Assault have been less than stellar. The whole game hangs for …

Re: Keep DBs off SB16s!!

in PC Emulation
Any card that claims SBPro compatibility that isn't an SBPro is likely only fully compatible with an SBPro 2.0 (which includes SB 1.5 and SB 2.0 compatibility.) It won't be compatible with a game that takes full advantage of an SBPro 1.0's FM capabilities. AWE32s, PnP SB16, or SB16s without true …

Re: Keep DBs off SB16s!!

Oh no. Vortex 2's DOS digital audio doesn't play nice with Wing 3. Pops, crackles, missing sounds. Ick. So, I dropped in that Ensoniq Soundscape Elite after all. With some BIOS PNP tweaking I managed to clear up two IRQs and two DMA for the darned thing. Reserving ISA IRQs in there is the key to …

Keep DBs off (most) SB16s!!

in PC Emulation
OMG. I've spent about 12 hours now trying to figure out the best soundcard setup for a PPRO rig I have. I've discovered that the SB16s have one horrible MPU401 waveblaster header. Stuck notes, off key nonsense, and more. I tried 2 PnP SB16s and a AWE32! Nevermind that the sound quality is notably …

Re: Best DOS video card?

CL 542x is actually quite fast in DOS. I upgraded from a Trident 8900C to the Diamond Speedstar Pro (5426) and it was very noticeably faster. I could run TIE Fighter SVGA with that CL chip. The Trident couldn't handle it at all. BTW, I'd always suggest using UniVBE with just about any DOS card. SDD7 …

Re: Best choice for an ISA Video Card

in DOS
I used to have one of those Trident 8900C cards. They are really terribly slow in DOS. I don't know how fast a ISA vanilla ET4000 is, but a VLB ET4000/W32p is insanely faster than that Trident card. I actually "upgraded" from that Trident to a ISA Diamond Speedstar Pro (CL 5426) and it was way …

Re: Terminator Games in 0.70

Tried running the Skynet version of Future Shock. It crashes or freezes a few minutes after starting a game. Seems to be related to dynamic core because a message comes up in the DOSBOX console window about dyncore causing an exception, I believe. But that was only on the time the game crashed. When …

Re: Need for Speed III Hot Pursuit with nvidia 7800 and glide?

in Windows
Can't get NFS3 working on my 8800 with zeckensack's driver. I followed the guide on his site exactly, too. I got high res with D3D though, by renaming the D3D dll file to voodoo2a.dll (or whatever that file is). In the registry I then changed the card info to 3Dfx and Voodoo2a I believe. As if it …

Re: Best DOS video card?

One thing I want to say about Matrox cards is that not only do they have fast DOS support with good VESA, but Matrox released BIOS updates for basically all of them over the years. These updates fix various DOS issues I believe. ET4000 and the S3 chipsets were the standard back in early/mid '90s DOS …

Star Wars Screen Entertainment

in Windows
Hey, does anyone have this super old screensaver? I can't for my life find my disks or any backups of it. I wanna set up a Win3.1 machine and try it out again.

Bioforge and the palm reader

in DOS
Would someone explain for me, in extremely simple terms, how to get the robot w/ severed arm to open the door in the beginning. I can't get this working even after reading walkthrus! The computer always says I'm using a bad code (only code in Dane's logbook).

Re: "Best of Both World" sound card? (EAX and A3D)

in PC Emulation
It means it won't sound right, most likely. A3D 1.0 isn't nearly as neat as 2.0 anyway. Lots of games use EAX higher than 2.0. EAX is by far the most popular standard and is supported by almost every modern game. EAX 3 on up adds more than just new reverb too. It does obstructions, for example. …

Re: Help with building retro PC

in PC Emulation
Voodoo3's lack of real AGP support is also a plus though. The cards are very lenient about what board/chipset they run on, unlike many many other 3d cards. Voodoo3's 3D should be more than adequate for older games. If it isn't fast enough you aren't playing games that really fit in the VOGON …

Re: Help with building retro PC

in PC Emulation
It can get tricky trying to get an optimal DOS and 9x box. I'd suggest not mixing PCI and ISA audio. Pick one or the other. A good DOS PCI card is Diamond Monster Sound MX300 (Vortex2), cuz it fairly decently emulates Sound Blaster PRO and it has a waveblaster connector. I used it with Wing …
