Re: Intel HD Audio equivalent

in DOS
Intel HD is based on AC97, but isn't backward-compatible. There might be special drivers which allow to use it in DOS, but unfortunately I don't have any information about them.

Re: Do you keep your retro rigs offline?

So if I connect my Win98 computer to Internet, it will become infected right away? I always thought today's malware only works on Windows 7-8-10 (NT based) and will simply not run on Win98 which is not interesting to attackers anymore...

Re: Terminator 2029 installer reboot

Hello and Happy New Year! Not exactly same game, but this might help I think Edit the DOSBox configuration file. Change cputype=auto to cputype=386_prefetch (Source: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Terminator:_Rampage )

Contrary to popular belief, it's very stable, provided you don't install weird crap and/or bad drivers. I've had similar experience with it back in 2000, when it was installed on my dad's PC. I also think Win Vista wasn't that horrible -- it's just consumer's computers of that time which were …

I believe that the "proper era" playing device for Doom is keyboard only. Although I've played many FPS with keyboard+mouse, I feel like cheating when doing so in Doom. Also, I believe that being proud of playing FPS with a gamepad is like being proud of driving a scooter. Mice were around at that …

Which games/genres do you think were abandoned since DOOM? Probably ones which are now only developed by indie studios... DOOM kinda proved (once again?) you can make serious money from (PC) video games so it didn't take much long for other companies to follow. Also DOOM was technologically …

Re: Do you use CRT monitor for gaming?

in Windows
No, but really want to -- even with my main PC (Win10) Too bad I don't have a room for it. After using big LCD screens I don't think I'll be able to use anything smaller than 22 inches (like SyncMaster or Sony CPD) and Mitsubishi Diamonds are expensive.

Re: Retro confessions. What are yours?

Era appropriate stuff is pretty neat, but I like to mix old parts and newer parts to some degree, and I almost always use compact flash cards instead of hard drives. Hard drives from these years can rarely be found in good condition, let alone working one, and the end result you'll get might just …

Most other games aged very well and their charm increased in a way, if you are willing to accept them for what they are. For some people this "charm" is enhanced by poor optimization and unstable framerates (either due to their hardware or the optimization). Yet for some people who have played …

For me retro is anything up to 2006 - the lifetime of XP. The days where games were developed for non widescreen monitors, EAX still mattered, many will have issues running on Vista and above...well justifies a retro build. Not really "retro" but 2006 is 2006 -- I use X-Fi Titanium PCI card in my …

Re: Unreal Gold reflections

in Windows
Just noticed the Logos change from EPIC/Digital Extremes to EPIC/Legend. So it's probably just two different maps (Unreal and Na Pali) Well, too bad there are no reflections in Na Pali.

Unreal Gold reflections

in Windows
When I launch Unreal Gold (D3D renderer), it loads Flyby map, and you can see these mirror-like reflections on the floor. but When you launch the game for the second time there are no reflections (like stone surface). When you relaunch the game -- reflections are back. When you launch the game for …

Geforce 4 Ti series isn't the best for Windows 98 The defining factor for some people (like me) is presense of DVI outputs. It's very hard to find GeForce 256/2/3 with these -- only D-Sub is available even on hi-end models. Even a top of the line 4800 runs much hotter than a Radeon 9600XT and …

I destroyed and tossed previous TUSL2-C (not current -- the other one) after failed recap attempt which resulted in damaged (scratched) conductive tracks. Only jumpers, BIOS battery, green NB heatsink and replacement capacitors I bought are left to remind me of this unforgivable act of vandalism, …

Re: What modern activity did you get up to today?

Had to reinstall Win10 (system began freezing after some seconds after login, quick look at event viewer didn't really help, and it probably was not caused by hardware (I disconnected my soundcard and a RAM stick, disabled overclocking and problem persisted). First, used "restore PC to factory …
