I made 486 heatsinks for my 5x86 chips using cheap 40mm heat sinks & dental wire off ebay. The fan is the most expensive part.

Looks like he's been gone for almost 2 years. Hope he's OK. I got a deal on a cheap Geforce4 MX 4000. Should arrive in a couple days. Fingers crossed that it works on the old boards.

Check your motherboard manual. Many 486 manuals call it a P24T. You want a 33mhz bus and you may need to set a jumper to enable the write back cache.

I've got 25850 chr/us with my ET6000 on my 5x86/160 (40 MHz PCI). Nice. When I run that benchmark on a 350mhz Pentium II, all of the PCI cards register at about 20,000 chr/us, so I gotta think that may be close to the practical limit for the 33Mhz PCI bus. Seems like going to 40MHz let's you get …

The silk screen labels on this motherboard claims it can be jumpered to do a 66mhz fsb with async memory. Seems a little scary though. I dont want to fry my video cards. Is there an objective way to test image quality?

I have some only 486 PCI motherboards & Video cards. One of the motherboards is a FIC VIP with a Via 82C505 that does VLB and PCI. That's great for apples to apples bench marks. Ran some benchmarks using an AM5x86 @ 33x4 = 133 and WT cache (couldn't get the WB to work yet) using Landmark Speed Test. …

Since it's an AT motherboard, the power switch would be in the power supply, no? I've learned that the part number is MBDPCI003AxWW and the model is "Gateway 2000 Anigma BAT4IP3" Many of the important jumpers are silk screened on the board on mine. I'll post picture tomorrow if that would help.

SSD's are nice, especially if you get a sata controller with good bios extensions. I've also had good luck in the pre-pci world with a $5 pata-->sata converter and a $15 64GB refurb ssd from newegg. The cup half empty is that the 504MB drive limit on most computers of that age make 64GB overkill. …

Loved those little boards in the way that I love Yugo automobiles. I don't want one, but I respect the people that have one. I guess you could try a heat sink and a new crystal in that board if you wanted too. Maybe air brush some flames on the side of the case too. p.s. Those are some funky simms!
