Re: DOS/Windows 98SE build questions

Thanks, I like the idea of using stuff I already own. Would I be able to sell off the 440BX and i815EP boards easily if I don't end up using them? The Yamaha card sounds great and I found my copy of FF7 with the rest of this stuff too! Would I need the nVIDIA or Voodoo2 card if I plan to use my …

Re: DOS/Windows 98SE build questions

If you want to build a "time machine PC" that's capable of running 95% or more of all DOS games released between 1985 - 1997 & practically all Windows 95/98 games (*with an additional Voodoo card for best compatibility), I would recommend a build with the Asus A7V333 / Athlon XP 2400+. I have the …

Re: My Voodoo 3 has developed a problem 😢

That's brilliant news! Only problem is they all seem to be 4 chips and 32mb... I guess that wouldn't work then. I'll keep looking, but if you have some links, maybe you could send then by pm? Indeed, you are right! It does seem like it's impossible to find 2MB ICs on the GeForce 2 MX (or even on …

Re: My Voodoo 3 has developed a problem 😢

The Voodoo 3 3000 typically uses 6ns SDRAM ICs (which makes it capable of achieving 166 MHz speed). You should be able to find this type of memory on very, very cheap GeForce 2 MX200 cards (in my country these are basically free). Of course, you could also use higher speed memory from cards like a …

Re: My Voodoo 3 has developed a problem 😢

Yeah, you truly are unlucky... I actually had a similar issue with a Voodoo 2 video card and after many weeks of debugging I literally ended up blindly picking a group of four VRAM ICs and replacing those (I did know that the second TMU was affected, though). Luckily, this solved the issue and the …

Re: My Voodoo 3 has developed a problem 😢

So sorry to hear that... It seems like a VRAM issue, but it will be a pain to identify which IC is affected. Sometimes, when the IC is shorted, you can detect the bad one by measuring the heat (the problematic IC will be hotter than the rest). Unfortunately this is not always the case.

Re: Windows 95 vs Windows 98

Right, I forgot to mention, for Athlon XP/Pentium 4 and even Athlon 64 I usually stick with WinXP SP2. :) It's much more lightweight than SP3 (and it's also more period correct anyway). Not a big fan of Windows 2000 (even though SP4 is decent). I did test it multiple times, but somehow I always find …

Re: Windows 95 vs Windows 98

- For 486 I stick to DOS 6.22 or Win3.1 at most - For Pentium MMX/AMD K6 --> Win95 OSR2.5 - Starting with Pentium 2/AMD K6-2+ and going all the way up to a Tualatin 1.4GHz/Thunderbird 1.4GHz --> I stick with Win98SE exclusively - For Athlon XP, Pentium 4, Athlon 64 builds (and even some Core 2 Duo/ …

Re: Any benefit to upgrading the BIOS on a Voodoo3?

You have a different use case by the sounds of it. Why not run it faster, I ask? The 2000 card I have has 6ns RAM, and as long as the GPU itself is capable of 166MHz (which it is), why limit it? Yes, I could replace it with a faster card, but why? I want a card that will play Glide games, and also …

Re: Any benefit to upgrading the BIOS on a Voodoo3?

Sorry to ask but.... wh.... why? Honestly, I prefer to underclock Voodoo cards instead of overclocking them, especially the Voodoo 3 (which runs very hot, even with a fan). They really are not very fast cards to begin with, so why bother with overclocking? You only gain... what? 10, maybe 20 FPS in …

Re: BENCHMARKS: Slot A (GA-7IXE & 750 MHz Pluto/700 MHz Thunderbird) vs Slot 1 (Gigabyte GA-BX2000+ & 750/1000 MHz P3 Co

The Slot A build now has a brother (with an identical case): yet another Slot 1 PC :-) Fun fact: through a series of unforeseen events, my wife ended up building 99% of this PC (and this is actually the first PC she ever built entirely by herself) - she even did basic wire management (which... looks …
