Re: Windows 95 vs Windows 98

- For 486 I stick to DOS 6.22 or Win3.1 at most - For Pentium MMX/AMD K6 --> Win95 OSR2.5 - Starting with Pentium 2/AMD K6-2+ and going all the way up to a Tualatin 1.4GHz/Thunderbird 1.4GHz --> I stick with Win98SE exclusively - For Athlon XP, Pentium 4, Athlon 64 builds (and even some Core 2 Duo/ …

Re: Any benefit to upgrading the BIOS on a Voodoo3?

You have a different use case by the sounds of it. Why not run it faster, I ask? The 2000 card I have has 6ns RAM, and as long as the GPU itself is capable of 166MHz (which it is), why limit it? Yes, I could replace it with a faster card, but why? I want a card that will play Glide games, and also …

Re: Any benefit to upgrading the BIOS on a Voodoo3?

Sorry to ask but.... wh.... why? Honestly, I prefer to underclock Voodoo cards instead of overclocking them, especially the Voodoo 3 (which runs very hot, even with a fan). They really are not very fast cards to begin with, so why bother with overclocking? You only gain... what? 10, maybe 20 FPS in …

Re: BENCHMARKS: Slot A (GA-7IXE & 750 MHz Pluto/700 MHz Thunderbird) vs Slot 1 (Gigabyte GA-BX2000+ & 750/1000 MHz P3 Co

The Slot A build now has a brother (with an identical case): yet another Slot 1 PC :-) Fun fact: through a series of unforeseen events, my wife ended up building 99% of this PC (and this is actually the first PC she ever built entirely by herself) - she even did basic wire management (which... looks …

Re: Voodoo 3 3000 AGP under performing?

Yeah, this was expected. It was clearly related to the motherboard or to its BIOS 😀 However, I'm not sure if it confirms that the Gigabyte board has issues with K6-2/3+ CPUs or not. In general, there are many things that work against you on SS7 platforms 😀

Re: So I bought a CPU for my 98 machine without realizing that my mobo only supports up to 1.3ghz

For socket 462 motherboards with VIA chipsets are cheaper and quite easy to find however they generally lag around 5-10% in performance behind nforce2 boards. First generation nforce boards are to be avoided as they have poor compatibility and stability. For a high end socket 462 - I see that you …

Re: So I bought a CPU for my 98 machine without realizing that my mobo only supports up to 1.3ghz

The only way in which you could safely use any modern PSU with a Barton 3000+, would be to find a motherboard with the 12V CPU power connector. Unfortunately, I've never had a VIA KT600/880 motherboard with this connector. Apparently there are some out there, but they're probably rare. Furthermore, …

Re: So I bought a CPU for my 98 machine without realizing that my mobo only supports up to 1.3ghz

Well, your 750W PSU is definitely too new, so, at best, it probably has 25 amps for the 3.3/5v rails (and a max combined wattage of 130w or so). Unfortunately that’s not going to cut it. You’d need an old PSU with 32amps or more, and 180w+ combined wattage (just to be on the safe side). However, if …

Re: So I bought a CPU for my 98 machine without realizing that my mobo only supports up to 1.3ghz

My recommendation would be for a board with the VIA KT600 / VT8237 chipset, more specifically the Asus A7V600-X. I own two of these myself, and besides having rock solid stability, it also has many useful features (such as the ability to disable the CPU L1/L2 cache and downclock the CPU to 500MHz - …
