95 for sure. 98 SE felt sluggish even on a P200MMX last I tried. I wouldn't fathom using it on anything under a fast Pentium II.

Most CF-IDE adapters just screw into a expansion slot and you access it from the back of your PC. Simple as that. I know Startech sells a front bay CFIDE adapter. I had one once and it worked pretty good. Came with a bracket to convert it to a regular ol' rear mounted adapter too.

Id rather have a 286 tbh. Especially a later fast 20/25mhz one. Those start to enter 386 performance territory and IMO are much more interesting than a 386 machine. Anything that definitively needs 386 instructions and horsepower would probably be better off on a good 486.
