Well, things are pretty much set hardware-wise. K7 has better IPC and FPU than PIII, and Quake3 is "3DNow!" optimised. Nothing beats GeForce256 DDR for the 1999 time period with engine that's defacto OpenGL gold standard. Software-wise it seems there are no rules, which irks me too.

Radeon 8500 was not known to suddenly die ... bad luck? It was a cool running card. Cooler was usually epoxied to the GPU like on Voodoos.

Yeah, I tried oil as well as WD40 to break the rust and that inhuman grip, but it only worked on two of the screws. That thing is bolted onto there by Thor himself. Don't do it. Just find one with SECC2 cooler. I actually just found a Pentium II 450 which worked out even better for me; now my 1998 …

You should mainly be concerned with 5V rail for socket A. Looking at the old PSU I took the system from, it's got +5V @ 22A. Whereas this new PSU is rated +5V @ 20A. Credit Cards works nicely too, the only pins I hate trying to straighten are LGA socket pins ...need a loupe and micro tweezers for them. Tried credit cards. Depends what are you trying to accomplish. Are you building a DOS machine? Period-correct would probably be TNT2 or Banshee, and for sound AWE64 or Aureal Vortex.

You can maybe get by with small purcupine-like BGA cooler for bridge chip. Zalman had replacement bridge coolers, they appear on eBay from time to time. For the GPU, holes are 80mm apart. Zalman VF700 or Pccooler K81. There used to be good Zalman replicas, but I cannot find them today.
