Re: What’s you Favorite ISA Sound Card ?

in Milliways
I also like the PAS16. Still have mine. It was the first 16-bit sound card I purchased after my SB Pro, back in the day. The main reason that I choose it over SB16 is that it has far less noise, and much better frequency response. I also liked the OPL3 synthesis. The downsides are that PAS DOS …

Re: Some recyclers are penny wise and pound foolish

I declined their counter offer for the entire order and won't be buying the individual hinge for $30 either. So now they get nothing, and I'll just use the laptop without the hinge. Greed. It's a real bitch, isn't it? Why support someone charging $30 for a piece of plastic? Pound foolish, indeed. …

Re: Year 2038 bug?

I think just making time t an unsigned 32-bit number would solve a lot more problems than it causes. How often do programs need to use *negative* dates? Everyone says making the 32-bit date unsigned is a problem, but it would at least make most software which uses 32-bit dates (elapsed seconds since …

Re: Technically impressive FM synth music

I have just added a download link to the individual mp3s. Although most of them I sourced from Youtube itself so that won't make any difference then. At least they can be played in your own player. You could check out https://VGMrips.net which tries to archive game music in the original …

Tragically, Youtube always compresses audio in lossy format, it throws away so much of the high-frequency info, etc. Do you have these tracks in a totally lossless form? (ie, the raw data tracks to be downloaded)?

Re: What is a genuine PC?

in Milliways
I guess the definition that still more or less stands today is a modular personal computer constructed from off-the-shelf parts that is 100% compatible with an x86-based IBM PC. If that's the case, then any modern PC of, say, the last 20 years doesn't qualify since they're not 100% compatible with …

Re: ebay enters the ashbin of history

Welcome to the club. I've been done with Ebay for at least 10 years, for exactly these problems. Can't even imagine selling there now. You're double-taxed, triple or quadrupled fee'd, and overall it's a miserable experience from all accounts. Those people who are so greedy or clueless will always …

Re: Is gaming a waste of time?

Not in small doses and / or playing small, self-contained games. We all need a break once in a while, and small games provide it very well, can even be a healthy outlet at times. The megaworld, ridiculously extravgant and "realistic" games of today, which intentionally have a paywalls in order to …

Re: When PC became soulless for you?

in Milliways
Yes, looks like we have lots and lots of apologists for walled gardens and corporate control, even on this venerated forum, which is purportedly and probably for an older contingent of 'retro' users. In other words, if the "corporate control" explaining away is this bad here, image how totally …

Re: club myce gone

The most important question is: Did anyone happen to make a backup or an achive of the posts? So much information lost at the whim and caprice of a greedy company. No regard for preserving the technical nature of much data which is irreplaceable.

Re: When PC became soulless for you?

PnP was the beginning of the end. UEFI was the end. Quoted for 100% truth. UEFI is an evil thing which has signaled the end to "bare metal" as we knew and loved it. It's really really sad that things had to come to that. Now it's just one "souless" machine after the other in some company's walled …

Re: Reasons to hate modern games

The digital commercial frontline of the world is a massive wave, pushing most people along with it. I've always been an odd-one-out in society, so the wave missed me. But it doesn't matter. I'm still here wasting my time rambling on about it. I've still got to go through life having it all around …
