Re: Why DOS died...

re: DOSBOX: People who "like" it can't be bothered to create a *real* bootable DOS memory stick? It isn't that hard. You then have full speed, no emulation, full-quality graphics (no pixel-aspect ratio problems or incomplete screens). The problem with DOSBOX is and always will be that it's running …

Re: Why DOS died...

Perfectly expressed above comments. I like DOS and still use it because it is *fast*, small, lean, and totally unbloated. You're up and running from a bootable USB stick in a second or two. Another second or two, and your program is up, with NO mouse clicks, ridiculous ads, or interference. In short …

Someone please tell me why this TPM 2.0 -- or even 1.2 is so damned important? Why is this ridiculous level of abstraction required to run an operating system? It's pretty absurd.

Re: 32-Bit is dead

All I want is to be able to run DOS on bare metal. And a UEFI-imposed system will not enable me to do that. No VGA BIOS??!! Out the door with 30 years' worth of good programs! These modern trends -- eliminating CSM Legacy module BIOS, enforcing secureboot / TSM 2.0, and all the rest are just an …

3) Compatibility with pre-existing content is by far the most important - nay, the ONLY important - consideration. When Thomas Edison invented movie cameras and projectors, he chose a 4:3 aspect ratio, and this remained standard for all movies for decades. When TV was invented, its inventors chose …

Re: What is your Favorite CPU and Why ?

Stepping SL36A of the good old Celeron 300A. I got one completely stable at 2.1V at 600 Mhz on an Abit BH6, rev 2 board back in 2000. I felt like I'd won the lottery. That was probably my favorite moment in computing history. I had finally achieved the holy-grail: a 100% overclock! Twice nomimal CPU …

Re: CD-Burners

I purchased my first burner -- Yamaha 2416 or 4416 if I remember correctly, in 1998. It was like magic! Suddenly I could burn audio CDs... I could even overburn up to 84 minutes! I immediately got to work making high-quality 16/44.1 CD masters of all my favorite MODs, S3ms and XMs. Burning …

Microsoft should totally release this on XP's 20th anniversary. ... and they should take the time to get rid of some of the legacy components. The old control panel, for example. You mean, they should ditch the terrible "apps" and *keep* the old control panel as being something that works …

Let's just say I used to work for these guys and got to run Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 before they were released. Reading through the posts, seems consistent with my experience that the "Bloat" gets added on after the beta releases. When Windows 8.0 was in Beta, I installed it on a Toshiba Techra M7 …

Just awful rubbish. Rounded edges are for kids, cheapens it and makes it look like a damn toy. Not one thing is impressive or would convince me to upgrade from Win 7 or a stripped down Win 10. Resources and memory consumption have probably increased by two or three times for nothing gained.

Much of the confusion could be mitigated by having a list right at the front of the readme.txt in the translation patch (which is distributed separately!) and the re-implementation engine, something like: The following combinations of translation patch, game data and engine are possible: Game Data …

I also registered at rpgcodex and asked the experts there is there's any way to run a native DOS .exe version of the game, even if it is the reimplemented SDL version of the game. All I would like to do is run the game natively in DOS. It appears the the SDL version is Windows only, but there's some …

Re: Super Mario 64 for MS-DOS

Late reply, as I just saw RaVeN-05's offtopic post about SM64 for DOS in the FitzQuake for DOS [fxMesa] of the Releases forum I've just discovered that this DOS port has been made, and it's such a shame that a compiled binary isn't available. (I mean a native CWSDPMI dos .exe). As I can't compile …

Same for video codecs. Instead of going higher and higher in resolution, settle for something good and ged rid of artifacts and blur. The improvements made in compression should not be used to save bandwith, but to enhance image quality at the same bandwitdh. Wiser words were never spoken! I've …
