Well normally you would need to change settings in the bios and that is it. There is a small chance you can enable/disable the IDE controller with a jumper. For that We'll need to fabricate a layout with jumper names and locations, so we can compare it to known boards with the same or similar …

You could try that to see if it is the bios not liking the size or the onboard IDE not liking the CF/adapter.

On the risk of getting burned: do you have a smaller sized CF card (32MB or something) that you can use for testing purposes? I want to make sure we are not running into a size limit of the bios before we start more troubleshooting.

It may work as long as you line up the pins properly. However, it may not fit on the CDROM side. Then you would need to use a floppy cable (which is 34 pin) but make sure there's no twist in it in between the connectors.

when i pop in the cf card n the 486 the post screes says mass storage hdc fail ! So you have already set the hdd parameters in the bios? Also that error message appears to be custom, it's not a standard one from the bios. For connecting, make sure the red lining on the IDE cable is in the side of …

Make sure the cable red stripe is lining up with pin 1 (one) on the connectors, both on the disk and the board. As for the CDROM you say it is IDE but not having a master/slave jumper makes me think it's something else with a 40pin connector. What is the brand/model of the CDROM? You need to connect …
