Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

I have a couple of questions regarding the SC-7: 1. Is there any battery that needs to be changed like in the SC-55? I couldn't find anything in the manual, and I'm guessing since it doesn't have any settings that it doesn't need one, but I just wanted to confirm. 2. For games that use General MIDI, …

Re: My first retro project

You need a 1501 "modded" BIOS, you can find out about it here: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?p=726413#p726413 Then of course you'll need to tinker with FSB settings, which I'm still about to fully figure out myself! Anyways, even if the E6550 is not running at its full speed at the moment, …

Re: My first retro project

Great build! I was wondering how you managed to get the Core2Duo E6550 CPU to work with the Asus P5PE-VM motherboard? I have the same CPU but I thought it required a motherboard with a 1333 MHz FSB, and this motherboard with its 1066 (O.C)/800/533 MHz FSB did not support it (https://www.asus.com/ …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

Via C3 CPUs are excellent for retro PCS. I have a Nehemiah 1.2ghz. It has better floating point than the Ezra which helps a lot with quake and other software game. I get roughly similar performance to a 600mhz pentium 3 at full speed. FASTVID does nothing for me but MTRRLFBE with the "LC WC" flags …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

Added a new piece of hardware to the build - a Roland SC-7! I was hoping to use it to mix the output of the YMF744, but the input volume is very low, no matter whether I use Input 1 or 2, and no matter what I set the Input 1 Level knob to. Ended up adding the SC-7 to the line-in of the YMF744 via a …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

The VGA extension cable finally arrived. Pass through video works fine with the AGP. However, when I run any glide tests or the 3Dfx Tomb Raider demo I get a "no signal" on my monitor. Using SetMul or reducing the RAM clock doesn't seem to make any difference. I guess the Diamond Monster 3D Voodoo 1 …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

I'm not sure a Voodoo1 will work properly on this system. The card has issues with later Pentium II (400MHz) systems and above. You can use it just fine without an extension cable as others have suggested, a two monitor setup could work for troubleshooting for the time being. I'd try a Glide game …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

You do know that Voodoo 1 and 2 are 3D-only cards? They can't work as standalone devices and need a companion card to handle 2D. And S3 cards are great for that purpose. Yeah, I know that. I'm using the onboard Trident IGP for 2D since it has proven to be as good as the S3 so far, and more …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

If you load up a glide game just move the monitors VGA cable to the output of the voodoo card. Hmm, I tried Tomb Raider 3Dfx patch, but I just get a blank screen from the voodoo card. I also tried running the tests from the SDK , but I'm getting a blank screen here as well. The diagnostic programs …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

I completely blew my budget and bought a NOS Diamond Monster 3D 4MB 3Dfx Voodoo 1 card. I hope you're happy @kolderman! I figured since this was a DOS only PC, the Voodoo 1 should have the best compatibility. It will replace the S3 Trio64V2/DX. Still waiting for the VGA extension cable before I can …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

Found some of my scribbles... Enabling FastVid on VIA Epia 800 boosts the frame rate in Quake DOS from 16.5 to 26.6 fps in my case, and enabling memory interleave in BIOS gives additional 2.3 fps boost for 28.9 fps total (timedemo demo1). Enabling FastVid only boosted the framerate from 16.6 to 20 …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

I take it all back. Cable manufacturers are really that clueless that they did not adapt their Y-splitter cables for dedicated gameports to work with MIDI enabled gameports on soundcards. Just on a hunch that the pinout diagram of the cable itself was wrong, and that they also put the ground of the …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

So I found one possible issue with the second Y cable I bought - it's pinout diagram doesn't match exactly with the one from allpinouts.org : This is one way to configure a second joystick and is probably the best way to do it, some people or manufacturers will replace the two blue wires connected …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

I have one disappointment with this system. I am not able to use my 2 Gravis Gamepads simultaneously in multiplayer games. I bought 2 Gravis Gamepads (not the Pro version), since they scream "DOS", unlike other joysticks that are more suited for Windows games. And I have 3 gameports - one each in …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

Memory management and my boot menu are a lot simpler. Everything just works in Real Mode with HIMEM + UMBPCI . I only use EMM386 for the few programs and games that won't start unless they detect XMS. I also use EatXMS for games like Aladdin that won't run with more than 16MB of free XMS. And I have …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

The extra speed won't cause any problems, but the drive will become very loud every time data is being read from a disc (e.g. during cinematic intro sequences). To fix that, you can use @Locutus' CDBeQuiet! to slow your drive down to 4x or 6x speed. I'm using it on both of my retro rigs and my …

Re: Socket 370 VIA C3 Retro DOS PC

I have a working floppy drive and a 40X CD-RW / 8X DVD+RW drive, which is a total overkill for this system. I'm sure it will cause problems if I try to run old DOS games off a CD-ROM, but I don't plan to do that. I always try to find a no-CD patch or use FAKECD / SHSUCD to mount it. I don't want to …

Joseph_Joestar wrote on 2020-11-04, 15:54: Oh, I just took a better look at your picture. It seems that you have an S3 Trio64V2. I'm not sure if that one actually counts as a Virge card, for S3D gaming purposes. My VirgeDX looks like this. You are right. I should probably stop calling it a ViRGE …
