Re: Could you build a retro PC right now?

in Milliways
Except for case and, to a lesser extent PSU constraints, I could easily build at least 4 or 5 Pentium 2 or 3 based ones as well as one VIA CPU based one and maybe an Athlon (think I have one board/CPU combo) with my stock of spares . Some people here could probably build dozens of machines with …

Re: Could you build a retro PC right now?

My limiting factor is cases and power supplies. I have 3 PSU + Case combos so that I can only ever have 3 built PCs at once. I don't need to be drowning in assembled PCs that don't get used! I only have 2 going at the moment mostly because my monitor only has two inputs. I have quite a few PC's …

Could you build a retro PC right now?

Could you build a retro PC right now with parts (just free parts, no taking apart previous or partial builds) ? Just wondering if anyone has full potential PCs just waiting as parts if so, and if you had to build it now, what would you build? For me - I couldn't, no spare MB, CPU or case! It's all ' …

A Retro computer should be looked at like an Arcade machine. It is for playing old DOS games and listening to music on old Sound cards. It’s just a piece of Nostalgia. You should NOT use it like an everyday computer to store your critical data on or surf the internet. I'd agree that one shouldn't …

Re: What is your Favorite CPU and Why ?

I bought a PC in 1997, it had a Pentium 166mmx. I'd had a P75 before that, but the 166 seemed like a real powerhouse - everything at the time just worked, any RTS at full speed seemed to cope with 100+ units all following their own paths etc, any media file ran, windows applications ran smoothly. I …

things you don't do with a retro PC? this for starters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9wsjroVlu8  ouch! on a somewhat related note, I am still amazed there are so many PCs and associated peripherals from the 80's and 90's - so much that one can still see them lined up in recycle centres …

Re: What game are you playing now?

gunman chronicles, I'd replayed half life (+OF and Blueshift) recently and as I had the CD for ages I thought it is worth a try. It's fun actually! weapons are very adjustable, maps are short enough not to have to backtrack, game mechanics work ok

My guess is games were a gateway to computing for many of us due to all the nonsense we had to do to get things working: creating boot disks, editing startup files, configuring jumpers, etc. It took building a retro PC for me to realize THAT was the fun part of DOS games for me LOL I like the idea …

Stretch - try to load windows 10 on a P2 or try Windows 98 on a quad core You say that as if it isn't fun to do dumb things like that :P Seriously, though, that kind of thing is a great source for day-projects. It's led to me doing absolutely dumb things like learning that Mac OSX Server 1.0 …

@gerry Welcome to the forum! I must say I find myself agreeing with the complete majority of items on both your "do" and "don't do" lists. I guess we are of a similar mindset. ;) I don't have a huge collection of parts, but I do have more working machines than I need (most of them are Thinkpads). I …

Welcome :D thanks :) Energy saving. I prefer to not to optimize power consumption of vintage gear, that's interesting, I've always used the psu the box comes with unless something is wrong with it, not a fan of fans either 1) overclocking/modding hardware I understand the appeal this has for many …

things you don't do with a retro PC

Having followed various retro computer forums, YouTube channels etc I note that there quite a few things that enthusiasts do that I don't: Replicate - try to get the exact PC from some period in my past Authenticate - build a PC with strictly period authentic parts Optimise - update every driver, …

Re: My kind of retro PC

Today I want to show you my retro PC build. It's a kinda retro PC because I don't mind about authenticity or choosing parts only form certain era. I'd agree, I like the idea of using SD to IDE drives and so on to help a computer continue working and not worrying about whether the parts are …
