Re: Which operating systems work on i586?

the most helpful information is knowing the last version that works of each OS Not necessarily still in development, though, right? OpenStep 4.2 QNX 6.2.1 BeOS 5.1d0 Zeta 1.5 Atheos 0.3.7 and its forkSyllable 0.6.7 Well these can also be useful, even if you weren't using them as your daily …

Re: Which operating systems work on i586?

Warlord wrote on 2021-02-26, 00:33: alpinelinux That one seems quite popular among the cloud folk (so should be up to date). I did test that myself in a vm at some point. It's quite minimal, but I think it has the same 192MB minimum ram requirement that most of the other modern Linuxes have.

Re: Which operating systems work on i586?

http://vectorlinux.com/products Requirements Light Edition: Pentium 166 or better, 64MB RAM minimum, 1.8GB hard drive space for full system - more for your data. Hmm, is this a case of false advertising? The install complains about pae and cmov . What hardware were you using? There *is* a note …

Re: Which operating systems work on i586?

VectorLinux Light Edition is usable on computers with 256 MB of RAM I'm sure there are other distros but this one is based on slackware. Yes and Caluser2000 mentioned Debian Jessie (released 2015, but still fairly current) back there, so that gives some indication that maybe some older Mint …

Re: Which operating systems work on i586?

Most of the CPUs are marked as working on ReactOS wiki page (well, no guarantees as you can expect). Didn't notice anything about chipsets. Do it for science? I must wonder though, what would be the niche for ReactOS where you would like to use it instead, say, Win98SE? (Even if it worked 100% …

I was a lurker for quite some time. The late, great qemu-3dfx thread was the one that finally pulled me in :D I'm really impressed by the level of knowledge here, love all the crazy projects and the overall spirit of this community. In fact, this is the only forum I participate in any shape or form, …

Re: Which operating systems work on i586?

guys it doesn't appear any of the current bsd releases are working on 586 I tried free net and open anyone have some versions laying around that the y can try so we can narrow down when they stopped working? On a physical machine? Does it crash or what? This quick test with qemu did successfully …

Re: Which operating systems work on i586?

I'm considering wasting a cd on react os. but after watching the linus video on it I'm having second thoughts lol thoughts? Aaaaaactually... I once indeed ran ReactOS on a Pentium with ~120MHz and 64MB RAM. The old releases of ReactOS truly ran on that. But where buggy as !?/!! 🤣 Edit : Don't get …

Re: Which operating systems work on i586?

I'm considering wasting a cd on react os. but after watching the linus video on it I'm having second thoughts lol thoughts? Yeah, it seems like an interesting concept but currently not very practical one. But for sheer curiosity's sake, why not. Hw support is lacking, so it's probably better to try …

Re: i430fx AMIDIAG issues with the LINT0 register?

in PC Emulation
Also, why does the image of the IMCR in the schematics contain the number "E0"? Edit: My question is actually: How is IMCRP determined by a BIOS(I'm using a i430fx/i440fx motherboard emulation)? How does it probe the hardware to know if it exists? Maybe a stupid question but can't it be hardwired …

Re: Which operating systems work on i586?

"Of course it runs NetBSD" I'm pretty sure I was using NetBSD 1.5.x or 1.6.x (and maybe OpenBSD too) on AMD K6-2, but u know it has been almost 20 years... More recently I did some testing on virtual machines and NetBSD definitely seemed much easier on the hw requirement side than Linux, for example …

This stuff goes way over my head, but here's something: https://reverseengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/26308/where-is-the-imcr-defined-in-the-docs The IMCRP bit of the MP feature information bytes (refer to Chapter 4) enables the operating system to detect whether the IMCR is implemented. …

Re: Which software to preserve CDs?

Thanks Zup, so there is some significance on the used software with MDF/MDS. About that MDS parsing: CDemu can use these MDF/MDS images and it does so via libmirage. This is all open source stuff AFAICR, so that's one place to look for some parsing code.

Re: Which software to preserve CDs?

ImgBurn to turn them into .iso files and everything is fine. No need to use other stupid formats that you need like 4 different programmes to convert over and over to get a format that you can easily use on Windows / DOSBox / etc. You don't own any game CDs do you? I do tend to agree with that …

Re: Which software to preserve CDs?

- Daemon Tools: My computer had an old version (5.x) and could not make a proper image. It stopped after encountering the first error, and I couldn't find any option to skip errors. I don't if it would work with later versions, but I didn't want to make another test. - CDBurnerXP: The MDF file shas …

Re: ROMs for PCem

in PC Emulation
I second that. I guess we can give hints, at least. Usually, the PC-BIOSes were free to download from each mainboard manufacturers' own web site, FTP, BBS.. However, other binaries.. Well, it depends, I guess. ;) Just a question, are the roms the same as the bios rom for each hardware. I mean, is …
