mmmh, possibility... remove the dead heatpipe from the two ? whatchamacallit ? the squares that get screwed to the chips. get two new working heatpipes solder one end to the squares drill two holes in case stick mainboard in case solder heatsinks to other end of heatpipes. profit ? 😀

From previous threads on this forum regarding similar situations, I kinda recall that the dma might be multiplexed, going through a logic chip, before reaching the 82c206. Going from that recollection, you might have a bad logic chip on he board.

Unfortunately, even if done so, Win98SE can't actually fully make use of ExFAT (and DVDs, too) because some system files cannot address more than 4GB (32-Bit). Seems like a Rpi ZeroW 's secondary memory interface (SMI) can have a speed of 83MBytes/sec. Should be fast enough 😉 A 1x CD-ROM transfers 150KB/sec. Audio shouldn't matter as that can be output out over the Pi's analog audio output. How much overhead does the IDE interface add? I have no idea :-)
