IBM PS/2 model 30 8086

Hello all, I've acquired a beautiful IBM PS/2 model 30 8086 in great cosmetic shape which is partly faulty. The first fault I am looking at is the 1701 - HDD not working. I can hear the heads are clicking 4 times twice after the platters have spun up and then the system reports error 1701. Clearly a …

Re: Sound Blaster AWE64

DOS games through AWEUTIL or ones with native AWE32 support use the ROM bank, but if those sound right then things are strange... but if some games are good and some not, the plot thickens Yes, that's why I was puzzled. DOOM works, MIDI works. It's the "synth" in Windows and the AWE Synth from …

Re: Sound Blaster AWE64

oh - I thought we established that most of those chips can be hot! :) I did check the lines with my scope, I haven't finished but I did observe some weird stuff on some lines as if there was some bus conflict (signals at 2.5V and so on) And that ROM is not a regular one that can be sourced and …

Re: Sound Blaster AWE64

Oh I see. So the EMU8011 chip is a 1MB ROM containing the default samples. Those sound corrupted. However when I load additional samples in the DRAM, those sound equally distorted. The chip getting hot is the ROM, not the main chip. So, assuming the ROM does not have anything to do with what is …

Re: Sound Blaster AWE64

Will do thanks. One more question: how does the system work when there is no DRAM attached? The AWE synth is distorted with no RAM attached (and also distorted in the same way when using DRAM) which makes me think there is an issue somewhere else. Where does the system store the samples when there …

Re: Sound Blaster AWE64

ahhh interesting! Then yes of course, that shares a lot of traces with the sample ram. Ok, I'll focus my attention there. I assumere there isn't a pinout of that ROM? And is there a way to read it via programmer/software? thanks!

Re: Sound Blaster AWE64

ah-a, we're getting somewhere :) Is it the attached? Is there a way to read it? I'd be curious to see what comes out of it (looking for stuck bits etc). Assuming it's the chip I highlighted, I buzzed all the lines and they all go to a different part of the main chip compared to the DRAM - and all …

Re: Sound Blaster AWE64

Good news. Not sure how but the card now sees the memory chip, 2MB. Not sure what I've done, I just inspected the card for a lot of time under the microscope and checked all the traces, I might have removed some tiny solder balls in between some legs and then I soldered another memory chip. Well, it …

Re: Creative PnP EEPROM collection

Yes, that's why I was kind of expecting a way to do that on the TL-866II software which I believe is quite popular. I would definitely expect this to be available as an utility of some sort indeed. Weird. Well, thanks for your input anyways, it was fun to test! If you have any other ideas for the …

Re: Creative PnP EEPROM collection

Ah, I see. So you're saying that your files are not compatible with my programmer - or better, it will flash it the rom incorrectly? I have a few options on the TL866II but I do not see anything that changes the file so it becomes "readable".

Re: Creative PnP EEPROM collection

oh, interesting. Are you saying that your EEPROM dump would work on my card but first I need to reverse it? And what do you mean with "reverse"? I tinkered with the file a bit but I can't make any sense out of it. What programmer do you use? Thanks!

Re: Creative AWE64 CT4500 upgraded to 2MB of RAM

@Tiido I found my eeprom was wildly different than the one you posted so I re-flashed it but the card did not work with that. Once flashed back to my backup, it worked again (with the RAM removed, it did not work with the RAM in place either). So I assume there are multiple versions for different …
