Alternatives to a real Roland SC-55

Updated May 28 with the suggestions from the thread Hi, I'm trying to get an overview of what the current options are to get MIDI that's as close to a real SC-55 as possible. What I'm aware of at this point is: Roland Sound Canvas VA , about $70 for a lifetime key, needs a Windows machine or Mac ( …

Re: Totally Stumped with Sound Card Issue

My point exactly. 😁 I'm not saying it's impossible to run DOS games with PCI sound cards, I'm just saying it requires a lot more luck and fiddling around than with an ISA card. You do have an additional compatibility layer in the system, it's never going to be as hassle-free as ISA.

Re: Totally Stumped with Sound Card Issue

In general, you will only ever get a (mostly) hassle-free sound experience under MS-DOS with an ISA sound card, which of course you unfortunately cannot install on the V3100. With PCI sound cards it's always a bit hit and miss which games will work with the drivers and which won't. In some cases, …

Re: The quest for the right ISA sound card

After rather disheartening experiences with the YMF-719 card , I finally got my hands on that ALS100 card I've mentioned above. I'm actually very pleasantly surprised - this card seems to be the closest to the optimum that I can get right now: The LS262 chip seems to be a very precise OPL3 clone, or …

Re: MP-32 : Pi based MT32, GM, ... module

Is this in any way related to https://github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi or will it be compatible with that software? Hardware for that project is also here: https://www.arananet.net/pedidos/product/pi-midi-1-3-a-baremetal-mt32-emulator-using-raspberry-pi-preorder/ - but currently out of stock with no …

Re: Yamaha YMF-719 issues

That's a bummer, but thanks! Just out of curiosity: Is the issue with Jazz Jackrabbit known with these cards or is that also a "specialty" of the one that I got? I can't Jazz Jackrabbit get to output non-distorted sound at all, with SETUPSA, UNISOUND or SETYMF, and no matter which Sound Blaster …

Re: Sound Blaster 16 Clones

keropi wrote on 2021-04-18, 16:53: sure! I have 2 cards: both unspectacular though 🤣 Fascinating - the ALS100 card I got my hand on is almost exactly the same, named without the "-4", and with a few different chips throughout:

Re: Yamaha YMF-719 issues

Use Tiido's YMF drivers instead, they are *cheffs kiss* perfect. Thank you - that was a great suggestion. For future reference, the tool is called SETYMF.EXE and can be found here: http://www.tmeeco.eu/TKAYBSC/ In my case, I had to run it with /FORCEPNP for it to work, but then I could initialize …

Yamaha YMF-719 issues

Hi, I have an A-Trend Harmony 3DS719 ISA sound card with a Yamaha YMF-719 chip on it. I'm using it in my Pentium 233 MMX PC and it is connected to an external MIDI device through the gameport. The PC has a Realtek PCI NIC, an ATI 3D XPression+ graphics card (PCI) and a Vooodoo1. I've deactivated the …

Re: The quest for the right ISA sound card

We recently had a thread about a software-only solution to the hanging note bug on Sound Blaster 16 cards, see https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=77392&p=907007. That's really cool, thanks for pointing that out! However, since it only solves some of the MIDI issues my SB16 has, it still doesn't …
