Interlaced mode is not always unusable. I lived with interlaced 1024x768 87Hz 16bit for many years as my monitor couldn't handle more than 56Hz at 800x600 (unusable) and other hardware had priority. Oh don't use wires. Buy machine screws 3.0 x 20, M3 nuts, washers size 3, springs size 3. They are really tiny and usually sold in small boxes. It works much better than original clips.

In addition to the above I would also consider price. Is Intel AL440LX much cheaper than Intel SE440BX-2 ? Do any of these allow you to set multiplier in BIOS (relevant for PII 333 which is likely unlocked)? If the goal is DOS then you may be better off with the 333 due to multiplier flexibility. …

Geforce 4 or FX for that PIII, same as for Athlon. Later Voodoo cards aren't really needed. Mine is rarely used. I found that predominantly games from 1997-1998 benefit from 3Dfx as Direct3D support was rare back then but it changed from 1999 onwards.

Most likely it is just a worn out card and therefore not stable on your VIA motherboard. VIA chipsets were quite common back then so I find it unlikely that it wouldn't be stable on one when new.

My guess would be both Voodoo cards are dead. Try them in another non VIA board to be sure.

You are definitely bottlenecked by the CPU. Results for my FX5600 which is slower than your FX5700: 3D Mark 2001 (1024x768 32bit), 45.23 driver PIII 900 - 5512 Ahlon64 3400+ - 8548 Your score should be about 30% higher than mine.

Isn't there a jumper for this? I remember my 386DX board had a jumper on it where I could select 33/40 Mhz. It looks like one of compact late 386 boards, so it seems unlikely it would only support 386 20Mhz.
