"New" old stock CRT monitors

Hey all, As I'm tinkering with vintage builds, I thought it would be nice to add a CRT monitor to my stable of hardware. Currently, I'm using a couple LCD's but none of them are quite like the experience of using a CRT for certain games or software titles. I've been searching around and found a …

Re: Win98SE Build

Honestly, you could probably get away with a modern ATX PSU with a 20-pin adapter if needed. this user's running on some OEM/SI PSU with ~15-16A 5v rail , another further in the thread is working with a bit less, and another yet doing a dual P3-S system on a modern ATX PSU. The Win98/DOS slot 1 in …

Re: Win98SE Build

Hey all, I was able to score a great condition and nicely priced QDI P6V694T/A10T motherboard, so I decided that I'm going to slowly collect parts to do both the originally planned P4 build but also a more period-appropriate P3 build since I have the board for it now. I do have a question about a …

Re: Yamaha SW1000XG

cyclone3d wrote on 2021-09-16, 21:23: Yes, it should work fine in both scenarios. If you want to use it for pure DOS, you can output MIDI from a DOS computer and connect it to the MIDI IN of the SW1000XG on the Windows computer. Do you think it would offer a dramatically improved experience in …

Yamaha SW1000XG

Would the Yamaha SW1000XG PCI sound card be good for games running in Win98SE? I completely understand that this card is not designed for games and is for music production. I also realize that it doesn't have DOS support, but would it work for DOS games run within 98, or native 98 games? I've …

Re: Win98SE + P4 Build

Also I find that the SB Live under DOS can avoid some of the speed sensitivity problems of early games. For example Sierra quest games can have problems detecting a sound card on a fast CPU, but with SB Live I can get sound in these games on a P4 without problems. It's great to hear that, since …

Re: Win98SE + P4 Build

Yes, SPDIF out. I use a pretty inexpensive DAC from amazon. Digital audio isn't always better than analog but when you are talking about mid/late 90's era capacitors and amplifiers it often is. Can you link me to the DAC? I'm just curious. Thanks! Wow, I've played more than half of them! :-D IMHO …

Re: Win98SE + P4 Build

I use USB keyboards and mice in Windows 98SE no problem - especially as it is a modern motherboard make sure USB keyboard is enabled in the bios. I would suggest hanging onto a ps/2 mouse for DOS. If I reboot into DOS from w98 it's hit or miss if the keyboard will work. If I use Phil's DOS starter …

Re: Win98SE + P4 Build

Thanks for the replies, everyone! It sounds like my mileage in DOS mode will vary. For the things that will have issues in DOS mode due to speed issues, will running them in a DOS window in Win98SE make any difference or will it just be the same experience in both? Back in the day, I remember the …

Win98SE Build

Hey all! I grew up computing with PC's in the 386-Pentium III era and was an avid and passionate gamer as a young person from about 1990-2001. After I went to college in 2001, I fell out of PC gaming, sadly didn't keep my PC's from the past, and have since only been a very casual console gamer. Now …
