Re: How often do you purchase retro hardware?

in Milliways
Rarely these days and most of what I do buy is just new bits to repair existing hardware (battery replacements, CF-IDE adapters, etc). I've got a pretty good supply of the common parts - challenge is finding bits when I need them (I have absolutely no idea where my box of VLB cards has ended up) and …

Re: Another "dead" Gravis Ultrasound Classic

I found my GUS Classic to be quite a challenge to get working on just regular MS-DOS 6.22. The installer couldn't see the GUS, or it could see the GUS but claimed whatever I/O base I had it set to was unavailable (even if I had just set it to one setup previously claimed was available), or I could …

^Which version? I can’t seem to get it to run. Anyone else running it on socket 7? What iso did you use? dual 133? Pentium? What mobo? I have a dual tyan I’d love to try haiku or beos out on. But it won’t boot it The BeBox had dual PowerPC CPUs - either a 603 at 66MHz or a 603e at 133MHz. BeOS …

Re: I found an open FTP with lots of software and drivers

Another more recent list here: Link Repository for Vintage PC Driver\Documentation Archives, FTPs, Websites I ran across this FTP server last week looking for S3 drivers but couldn't connect so assumed the FTP server was gone. Turns out I just can't connect from my house - I can connect just fine …

Re: Another "dead" Gravis Ultrasound Classic

The notch on the chip is how you tell which way round it goes - it should be on the same side as the notch on the socket. In this case the socket notches are facing right towards the GF1 chip but it looks like you've got the two RAM chips installed with their notches facing left. Assuming all the …

Re: Terminal multiplexer for DOS

Novell DOS 7 can preemptively multitask and switch between multiple DOS programs according to the back of the box. Manual doesn't say anything about copy&paste between applications or terminal scrollback though. I assume copy&paste between applications wouldn't be impossible to implement but I can …

IBM OS/2 2.0 turns 30 this month

in Milliways
Turns out IBM OS/2 2.0 turns 30 this month - kind of. There was a Limited Availability release of it in October 1991 but I think that was more a beta level version released to certain customers due to contract obligations. The proper public release was April 1992, six months before Windows 3.1 came …

I've been trying to get round to dedicating a system to Haiku exploration, I've got this feeling that it's really going to take off soon, has a lot falling into place whereas linux desktop is falling apart again, and windows 11 is windows 11. Yeah, I'd say its got a much bigger chance at taking on …

Re: Windows 3.1 will turn 30 soon

Never heard of Norton Desktop before! Or I have heard of it but forgotten. At any rate I've never seen it until that video. Another one I'd never encountered until the last few days: IBM WorkPlace Shell for Windows 3.1. A fair bit newer than Norton Desktop though.

Was BeOS compatible with Windows in some ways or vice versa? No compatibility at all. Only reason I can think of it being mentioned in the GTA3 readme …

Something I remember really liking was the mail integration -- your mail was just visible as files inside your $HOME directory (like a UNIX Maildir), but unlike a Maildir, the GUI file browser could still do nice things like sort by subject, from, etc. In fact, the file browser was the primary GUI …

Re: BeOS

Never used it myself - only ever read about it. Proprietary operating system with a nice GUI and some degree of unix compatibility. Don't know how far that compatibility went but it was enough for it to use GNU Bash as its shell and GCC as the compiler. Filesystem (BeFS) was pretty flash and made …
