Sometimes the SB16 Emulation & DOS drivers doesn't install when the CD installs WDM drivers even if you select them as an option during install. If that happens copy the driver CD to your hard drive, edit audio.ini under Audio/English/Setup, and set WDM to 0 and reinstall. You probably want the VXD …

Use Checkit version 3 to see what is taking up your upper memory. Run it on a clean boot or "safe mode command prompt only". You probably have some BIOS ROMs taking upper memory. Solved it! Based on: https://hwiegman.home.xs4all.nl/msdos/96130.htm I checked for a DBLSPACE.BIN and DBLSPACE.INI on the root of the C drive and deleted them. I just noticed that on my Pentium 166 I barely had any conventional memory when using the disk vs the 619kB I have when shutting down to MS-DOS mode in Windows 98. XMGR did not like the /PA flag, it gave me an A20 error and failed to load. /PN didn't cause an error and Doom loads just fine with the /PN flag or with no flags. However with no flag or with /PN nothing is loading high so I have only 472kB conventional memory vs 619kB with himem.sys. With HimemX …

Another 256KB module from ASUS didn't work at all in the M520, but worked fine in my Intel Advanced / EV motherboard. I guess my question really was "does FastDoom take the fixed Doom render resolution and then scale it for the special FastDoom resolutions, or can FastDoom scale the Doom render resolution itself up", thanks for the answer!
