For all my PC gaming I use a dual shock psx type controller with a nice usb adapter. The cheap ones have a lag/latency issue. Nothing like a PSX controller.

with most (not all) of the ps/2 keyboards I've worked with you can unplug and replug them on powered on, but never mice.

MM2 still plays fine, without dosbox, with pc squeeker sound. from my WinXP box, and my Server 2003 box. However dosbox refuses to run it except for in tandy mode. Seg fault and then SDL parachute.

Wouldn't a hard drives contents be far more likely to have changed? I rarely use my floppy, but I change stuff in my retro games folder all the time.
