Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

Just to post the official Documentation on this bit of info.. --- "It is best to completely ignore SETUP.EXE that attempts to allocate and test resources for the GUS PnP Interwave chip, the program is just too buggy and unstable (this behavior is irrelevant to OrpheusII , the same applies to the …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

Then it may be correct. Perhaps a GUS is on its own separate resources and emulates Sound Blaster compatibility; or in the case or Orpheus, gets that from the Crystal chip instead. Yep, it gets it from the Crystal chip, it does all the SB duties. Everything about the normal GUS is disabled except …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

Thar doesn't seem right. It should be IRQ 5, 7 and DMA 1 and 5. It's very common for Windows to assign sound devices resources that are out of range or not compatible with DOS games. When in doubt, lookup the default resource layout for a Sound Blaster 16: https://retronn.de/imports/soundblaster_ …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

That's usually a sign that the IRQ and DMA isn't setup right for the card in Device Manager. So in Windows it defaults to installing my GUS device on irq 11 so I have to go in and change it to 7 manually. Before the change, the game says the IRQ needs to be 7 or less After the change that's when it …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

Great... think I screwed something up 🤣. Now DOS games in Windows can't detect the GUS at all... Not even for digital sound like I had working before. maybe ill try uninstalling all the apps and deleting the devices in the control panel and see if I can get it working again...

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

Running through the setup of my Orpheus II in Windows 98 but have some questions... Are we supposed to install the Windows 95 Plug and Play drivers, I assume so as they really are the only ones that would work in Windows 98. That said, it does install the ULTRASND Directory in the C:\ drive. But you …

Re: Voodoo 5 Nocuta Mod

That was my inspiration ;) I didn’t have a special crimping tool, if you know of one let me know? I just used a little solder to hold the wire to the pins and used some needle nose pliers to clamp down on the wires. They are solid and well attached. Thanks for this - I have the same mod in my near …

Voodoo 5 Nocuta Mod

Finally got a hold of a Voodoo 5 but one of the fans was a little noisy (makes sense for something 20+ years old). Can't seem to find any new old stock of the original fans, so figured why not upgrade them instead ;) Noctua 40mm 5V fans to the rescue!! Picked up some parts off digikey and a little …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

5v 16mb fpm 72pin simm is what I use. Works good. Looking to get this one, seems to match the specs you said. Not sure if it matters if the ram chips are on both sides or one side? https://www.ebay.com/itm/155386594829?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=UCTK6vzSTjm&sssrc=2349624&ssuid= …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

Just tried to run the doom midi file in true DOS mode using dosmid.exe (not in windows DOS mode although I tested there and it had the same effect) and it also sounded weirder and not even like playing it in Windows Media Player or Winamp. Dosmid reported it was using OPL3. I thought for sure in DOS …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

Has anyone else noticed when using OPL 3 in Windows 98 with a media player that it sounds very different then running OPL3 in a DOS Window while in Windows 98? I was just noticing my Doom midi tracks sound very different when played directly in a media player like windows media player or winamp in …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

So I got around to testing the advice of not doing orphinit.bat at start for when booting into Windows. But now I have a new issue (but of course). I have my Midi sound from my SC-55 routing back into the Line-In of the Orpheus II, but it seems like when I run a DOS game in Windows it doesn't …
