Re: What Piece of PC Hardware Have You Owned Longest

I still have a Realtek RTL 8139A PCI NIC, from 2001 or so. Possibly earlier than that. It's been used in 4 or 5 different PCs over the years. The last time it was in service was in a Pentium 4 Hackintosh, which had an Intel on-board network chip that was incompatible with OS X. I was sharing an …

Re: Favourite games / programs for Commodore 64?

Wizball - still great fun in co-op mode - you're a wizard charged with bringing back colors to the world - with the help of your cat Dropzone - frantic Defender clone, great gameplay. Thrust - zip in, steal the pod and escape the defense system while grooving to some of the best music ever …

Re: NVidia Demo Dawn Ultra Texture Bug

I don't see the "body divided in two parts" thing here. 64-bit Windows 7, 344.75 driver, GTX 660. Ultra model, shaders and config files are part of the Dawn demo that I downloaded. I don't know how to invoke it though, there is only one executable. Maybe it depends on video card Device ID. There's …

Re: os9 games on a Mac mini ppc

See post #5 Seem to be rather extreme issues for such an old game but there you go, I never had problems with dosbox playing anything so massive slowdowns like this are new to me - if it was a game that needed a G3 400 I wouldn't have been surprised, but something from 68k/earlyPPC days? Oh... could …

Re: a good motherboard/CPU for windows XP

I am more interested in running my camera software... canon digital photo studio. That requires XP and the NET framework. If you get Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, you can use "Windows XP mode", it's Microsoft Virtual PC + a free copy of Windows XP: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/ …

Re: Game Pads

It depends on what you use it for. The d-pad is great for weapon selection or whatever in modern games. Try playing Mr. Driller in MAME with the d-pad. All out gamer-rage guaranteed, even if you haven't felt that since you were 14 years old. I can promise that you will want to punch a hole in the …

Re: Game Pads

I have two 360 pads, and they are great for modern games, but in my opinion the d-pad is absolutely useless for retro gaming. It's way too easy to accidentally hit a diagonal, it's "squishy". This causes your character to get stuck in games that don't support diagonal movement, or move in the wrong …

Re: Unified for TNT2 M64?

The unified driver worked fine on my 16Mb TNT back in the day, at least with Carmageddon II. It's funny how memory works, I clearly remember that Carmageddon II had fog in 3dfx mode when using this driver on the TNT, but I can't remember if I tried any other titles.

Re: SDI/broadcast CRTs

Try to find out if there's a hidden service menu where you can make adjustments. Most of the time these can be reached by holding down a certain combination of buttons while switching on the monitor. It's possible that the BVM is too old to have that kind of menu though. Maybe there are trimpots …
