Re: Lack of memory?

The command mem will show you how much memory is free inside DOSBox. Generally, DOSBox has more free conventional memory than almost any real DOS machine. So IF there is really a lack of memory (and the error doesn't occur because of something else), it's going to be a lack of EMS or XMS memory. …

Re: Setting Dosbox refresh rate for 720x400 mode

You wouldn't buy it anymore because it costs $5.26 more than the competing product ;) DOSBox can't set the refresh rate because SDL can't. Or rather, because SDL 1.2 can't. AFAIK SDL 1.3 adds that possibility, but it never ever seems to get done. 1.3 is becoming the Duke Nukem Forever of libraries …

Re: DOSBox faster than the real thing!

Protected mode is generally supposed to be slower than real mode, actually. Certainly was back in the 286/386 era, but I wonder if that's still the case today when the vast majority of x86 CPUs spend most of their time executing 32-bit protected mode code. It would make sense to treat real mode as …

DOSBox faster than the real thing!

I have found that DOSBox with core=dynamic cycles=max will run DOOM's "doom -timedemo demo1" faster than real MS-DOS 7.10 (i.e. a stripped down Win98 that boots into DOS) on my system. (E8400, nVidia 8600, 3GB RAM, Vista 32bit). I get roughly 990 realtics in DOSBox and about 1145 realtics in MS-DOS. …

Re: Someone with an original IBM VGA Card?

Thank you very much GH! In case anybody is interested, I've extracted all the fonts and recomposed the 9x variants out of the 8x variants and the alternate tables. I could post/attach them here unless that violates some rules.

Re: Someone with an original IBM VGA Card?

What the hell are you doing with those fonts :) Patching them into DOSBox... Using them on the Linux console... Btw. nice image collection here: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Tileset_repository Thanks. Unfortunately no real IBM VGA stuff on there it seems (but CGA and some EGA is there …

ANJU SERMANI Once a body hath turned to ash, the soul which once inhabited it is sent on to its next life. It, therefore, takes a miracle of enormous magnitude to reclaim it. Realize first that the spirit must leave another body and another life in order to return to thee. If thou perceives that …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

My question is how hue was handled in the past? how does a monitor know whether it has to use "rgb hue" or "640x200 hue"? IIRC: for 640x200 composite mode, it depends on some bit in some register of the CGA whether a composite monitor will display it in "composite mode" or in black-and-white For …

Best Emulator / VM for running Windows 3.1 programs?

What would you consider to be the best Emulator / compatibility layer / or VM for running software from the Windows 3.1 era on a modern system? The point isn't so much running 3.1 itself but software that was written for it and doesn't work on Vista (or XP). Dosbox? Wine? Virtualbox? Bochs? VMware? …
