Re: Dune II Refuses to Run on Win98SE

in DOS
If you don’t load Emm386.exe then you probably won’t get DOS to run in high memory. So unloading that to free up conventional memory is not helping. We should instead look into why certain settings in config.sys doesn’t seem to take effect. If the system respected the settings I provided, all of MS- …

Re: nGlide 3dfx wrapper performance hit

Thanks a lot, I will look into that! Fun Fact: If Valve's Source engine detects an Nvidia FX-card, it dials back to Shader model 1.1, since FX really sucks at shader model 2.0. The FX cards are OK as long as they run in DX8.1 -mode aka Pixel Shader 1.1, which is what psVoodoo uses. I had never heard …

It seems to me your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS -files take no effect at all. I think you will have to reboot into MS-DOS mode for these to take the necessary effect, and thus free up conventional memory. How do I boot into DOS mode in Windows 98? Booting into a pure MS-DOS mode using Windows 95 or …

Tried it and it didn't really help, unfortunately. I can load drivers in the autoexec into high with LH right? Because that's what I did. LH is equal to LOADHIGH, so no problem there. Can you at least show me how much free conventional memory there is now, after the change? ( mem /c | more) And …

Why don't you try this: SYSTEM.INI device=c:\windows\himem.sys device=c:\windows\emm386.exe 2048 dos=high, umb deviceHigh=c:\windows\command\ansi.sys files=200 buffers=20 Note: I am not using the parameter for emm386, precisely because some games require EMS memory. Games that can take advantage of …

Can you upload a copy of your config.sys and autoexec.bat? I just changed it to reflect the advice AppleSauce gave. These are the exact contents of each: AUTOEXEC.BAT REM C:\DOS\MOUSE SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 P300 T6 SET CTSYN=C:\WINDOWS LH C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM CONFIG.SYS …

Re: Windows XP/98 Gaming PC Build Log

Around year 2006 I had a setup quite similar to the one you are building. Athlon XP 2400+, Radeon 9700 Pro, SoundBlaster Audigy with EAX, 2 GB Ram. Obviously I did not have an SSD, but I had a pretty fast 7200 RPM hard drive. I think you might struggle maintaining high framerates on "ultra" details …
