Re: The Essential Sound Cards

Comments: About 5 or 6 years ago I bought a mint-condition ISA SB16 from an online vendor. I'd have to check, but I think it was an SB16 ASP (can't remember the model number). I do remember that it definitely has a very small Yamaha OPL3 chip on-board. I find it interesting that you would choose the …

Re: Super2xSaI, 2xSaI and SuperEagle

If you've already done most of the work, I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy having the extra scalers to play with 😀 Personally I think those scalers make things look flat and cartoony, but for old DOS games that may work quite well.

Re: Problems with DOSbox (mount c...)

You'd be surprised at what people try... What is the exact sequence of commands that you're trying to perform in DOSBox? My guess is that after mounting, you're trying to switch to the C: drive by typing something like: cd c instead of just: c: or: cd c:\oldgames instead of: c: cd \oldgames

Re: Audigy 2 unofficial DOS driver

in DOS
In my opinion it's probably not worth the effort to get any PCI sound card working for DOS games in a 100MHz box. It'd be better to pay $20 for an decent (but old) ISA sound card. As far as I know, the Audigy cards used hacked Ensoniq drivers for DOS support, as Creative bought out Ensoniq and used …

Re: The Essential Sound Cards

Looks like a pretty comprehensive list to me. Between Roland MT-32, OPL, and Roland GS for music, and 8- and 16-bit SoundBlaster for audio, there are only a handful of DOS games that may not run to their full audio potential. I have heard that the GUS is essential if you're into old demos, as it …

Re: Could the PS3 be the best console yet for DosBox?

in Milliways
I think people are missing the point with the PS3. Sony is in it for the long haul with the PS3. I heard Sony claim the PS3 will last 10 years. My prediction? 5 years....just like every other console. They talk big, looking down on both Microsoft and Nintendo but I think they are going to be in for …

Re: More than 4 IDE devices?

in Windows
If you have a system with PCI slots, you can get decent PCI IDE controller add-on cards. There are a few brands out there, but the only one I've used is Promise, which seems decent.

Re: Alien Trilogy

http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/alien-trilogy/techinfo Looks to me like it didn't have any accelerator support out of the box - at least none that was advertised.

Re: Could the PS3 be the best console yet for DosBox?

in Milliways
My prediction is that unless Sony drops the price on the PS3 before the first Christmas after it launches, it's going to tank miserably *everywhere* except in Japan. The Wii, despite the name, is going to do quite well due to the low price point, Nintendo branding, and unique features. The XBox 360 …
