Some Legend adventures don't have support for VESA and none support S3 directly. Get ykhwong's build (or build CVS with unofficial SVGA patch) and set "svgachipset=et4k" in dosbox.conf. For information about unofficial builds consult DOSBox SVN Builds.

Most stock Tseng cards were limited to 256 colors. There were "hi-color" capable cards (those with Sierra or similar DAC) but they were quite uncommon. Before you spend too much time configuring DOSBox, try this: copy files config.nt and autoexec.nt from C:\Windows\repair to C:\Windows\System32 (overwriting existing files). If that does not help then DOSBox is the next option.

PVGA1A is special in one respect -- for a short while it was the only SVGA available to consumers. It was not even called SVGA then (extended VGA or VGA Plus). There may be games and demos that just don't support anything else -- so far I've found only one but I did not do really thorough search yet …

I will update the patch tonight. The "lowerbank" implementation is definitely not compatible with my patch -- not all cards used 64K banks, PVGA1A had 4K. Just checked, that error is in the executable but even if you remove any file, you should not see that one. This is some generic problem. Can you post your dosbox.conf file (as attachment)? Also, when you run install from CD, tell it to install into subdirectory on C:, not to the root -- my version …

For one thing, good CF cards do some tricks internally, so the number of rewrites should not be compared directly to HD. Also, even if they did not, I have a feeling that they've surpassed number of rewrites of vintage Conner drive quite some time ago.

Using CF instead of HD is a good idea. It is pretty much the same interface, and on real vintage PC you are limited to 2GB HD anyway. Many modern HDs don't even have 2GB switch anymore; even if they do, it looks kinda stupid to use 2GB off 200GB drive. OTOH, 1-2GB CFs are very reasonably priced …

There are two versions of SimTown -- one for Win3.1 with Win32s, the other is for Win9x. Be careful with newer version on Win2k/WinXP, it may mess up some icons. Older version requires WinG. Not sure if it can be used on XP. Most likely, yes, but it will require some figuring out.

Would work fine for 486 or non-MMX Pentium. Slightly underclocked Celeron will also work. The problem is that in those older systems most noise was coming from hard drives.

Check this: http://www.3drealms.com/tech/biomenace.html#video. Apparently, the game was always known to have some issues with SVGA, and it has SVGA compatibility mode just for that purpose. It's probably slightly slower but the game is not particularly demanding, so it does not matter.
