Re: Roland CM-32L alternatives

All of those are pretty tough to get. I don't know of many other options, unfortunately. There's a Roland E-30 keyboard that is a CM-32L in a keyboard form (with a few extra FX combinations). Another option is to use the MT-32 with the drum sound from the SC-55mkII, set to CM/LA kit, that way you …

Re: Differences between MT-32 variants

Most games were designed for the original MT-32 and as such it's your best bet for gaming. However, as with most of these sorts of things, the "problematic" cases wouldn't be noticed by 90+% of users in the actual game. There's not any games I'm aware of that work "better" with a revised MT-32, …

Re: King's Quest 6 locks up after speech

Yeah, I had an AWE32 as a kid - it was (and is) a great card, but has a few quirks. Indeed, I am using the CD version of KQ5! I was trying to enjoy the whole "entering into the age of the MPC" experience with KQ5, but the voices of the characters are really, really bad... It was passable back inb …

Re: Is it possible to emulate a Roland SC-55?

it's somewhat accurate emulation but not the same as an actual SC-55. TBH, nothing is the same as an actual SC-55. Yeah, even an SC-55 is not the same as another SC-55 :) https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=37047 So the ROM samples are one thing, but a perfect emulation should allow to …

Re: King's Quest 6 locks up after speech

This is I think an IRQ issue, maybe the ThunderBoard driver uses a different IRQ port? I know with the same setup on a Pentium 1 I had to play with drivers for some games. Not sure I ever got QFG4 working outside the Windows version. Is there a way to change the IRQ KQ6 uses? Also, King's Quest V …

Re: Is it possible to emulate a Roland SC-55?

Roland's emulator emulates a SC-8820, so the SC-55 map is inaccurate like the real hardware's map is. IIRC, some samples are different and the effects are different. Bottom line, it's not like flawless MT-32 emulation, it's somewhat accurate emulation but not the same as an actual SC-55. I've heard …

Re: King's Quest VI AUDBLAST problems? Try AUDTHUND

in DOS
Yes, it's a known fix. One of the Sierra games' help file (README) even says something like "If you're having problems with the Sound Blaster driver, try selecting ThunderBoard, even if you don't have one.". I had to do it on my Pentium 1 with Larry 6, IIRC.

Re: Games that uses the CM-32L specific sound effects

I know one (small) example is Quest for Glory IV. At the North side of the Mordavian village (the monastery scene), there is the gravedigger Igor carving a tombstone. His hammer strike sounds proper on a CM-32L, but on an MT-32, it's some other sound (I recall it's something like a horn or a brass …

Re: Sierra/Dynamix sound driver hacking

in DOS
Apologies for falling way behind on this thread. I've updated the first post with what I believe to be a current list of links to drivers, tools, and other useful tidbits. Let me know if you feel I've missed anything. Edit: Also fixed all links to actually jump to the correct posts. Questions: 1. …

Re: Games that uses the CM-32L specific sound effects

Well i plugged a midi keyboard and i tested the sound presets Out of interest, how'd you test the SFX? Most people wouldn't be familiar with where the sound effects are in the CM-32L. I tested it with a keyboard 🎹 plugged in. I used renoise and searched programs and switched to the drum machine …
