The Korg NS5R has some XG support, and the NX5R/N1R have full XG support. The Roland SC-8820/50 have XG support, also. Really, it depends what level XG you need.

The question is- is it just the 128 default MT-32 instruments? if so, it has pretty limited use.

I can tell you that no Sierra GM game will sound better on a MT-32 than the SC-55. And with what you're describing, using the GM driver, many times this will make it even worse (incompatible instruments, not enough polyphony, etc). To even do this for Sierra games you'd need to load a good GM patch …

Betrayal at Krondor: Redbook audio or Roland SC-55? The Redbook audio on the 1994 CD version is definitely not a recording of the SC-55 soundtrack, but apparently some tracks are shorter (by how much?) and they don't loop or fade out. While the CD version was released one year after the floppy …

While those sorts of modules won't be any more than a footnote, my current knowledge of how they sound is basically zero, so it's still good to know/learn. 😀 I guess all I know about the device is that it uses a form of FM Synthesis, right?

Ok, thanks. It's been so long since I had hardware, I had forgotten. I think in DOSBox Win 3.1 there's an Adlib option in Windows, for MIDI though? I guess that's the same thing, Adlib for MIDI games and not for OPL games.

Hey folks, Apologies if I'm asking a dumb question. Basically, is it possible to disable Adlib for FM Synth, while allowing what is set up as Windows "MIDI Synth" to play FM (e.g. real FM hardware, or in my case, a softsynth driver)? Or does Windows MIDI setup only apply to MT/GM games?

Only did this in Win 95, sorry.. Although, I assume you know the "MT-32" soundfont doesn't work for 90 or so% of games.

Alesis Nanosynth = Alesis QSR waveforms, but has GM programs instead of the QS programs (although they can be loaded). Alesis S4 Plus = older gen (1993 v 1997).
