Re: Wing Commander Academy & Armada

in Milliways
I never played Academy, but loved the splitscreen two-player option that Armada provided. Even back in the day, I never really got into the campaign mode, as it lacks the story line from the regular Wing Commander games. (Let's face it, WC was graphically advanced in its day, but the gameplay itself …

Re: Old notebook

TFT (active matrix) LCD screens were then marketed heavily because older LCD screens used the DSTN (passive matrix) technology. TFT displays are superior to DSTN ones as DSTN can look washed out, a little murky and generally have bad response times (resulting in ghosting).

Re: DOS error 2?

It won't have invisible characters. The simant.exe is starting, looking for its data files in the current directory, giving up as there aren't any and then displaying the error message. So yes, just go into the directory itself and start the game from there.

Re: Application won't run

If this is Exact, that needs share.exe loaded. In fact, the same goes for many other such programs. Although I don't think share.exe will fulfill its actual intended function when run under DOSBox, it should load and allow the program to run. I used that to help a friend get Exact running under …

Re: Runtime error 216 (Dig-it!)

Found another version, but in MD5 still things diferent It sounds like there's quite a few different versions of the game out there, making our earlier theory even more likely to be correct. PD: The problem sound still there in the downloaded version. The cause would be using windows vista? Very …

Re: Runtime error 216 (Dig-it!)

It probably wouldn't be legal and you shouldn't be asking anybody here to provide it for you, because that is simply against the forum rules. If you really want it, the game is easy enough to find (and I daresay you've done your bit by getting an original copy and shouldn't feel too bad about …

Re: Runtime error 216

Just because the files are different doesn't mean that it's not an original or even a corrupt version. It may simply be that there is a bug that was fixed and a new version has been released. Maybe you have version 1.00 and Jorpho has 1.01 or something. Go look for a version number somewhere before …

Re: Runtime error 216

Runtime error 200 is division by zero, which is (in that case) is caused by the processor being too fast to do the timing calculation in the old Turbo Pascal's CRT unit. Runtime error 216 is general protection fault, usually the result of a NULL pointer dereference. That is not likely to be the …

Re: Runtime error 216

A quick check at MobyGames says it's a DOS game (not designed to be run under Windows at all, although it does run under the most common Windows versions of the time). Then it is likely that it is just that programming error, possibly surfacing through an incompatibility with DOSBox. One of the most …

Re: Runtime error 216

That error is the "general protection fault", which is probably caused by a program error. This has nothing to do with the version of DOS reported by DOSBox, especially if it's a Windows game (as you seem to imply). If it is a DOS game, then it has nothing to do with Windows and you could instead …

Re: Need help - numpad keys don't work!

It works fine for me under Windows. What OS are you using? Have you tried using those keys in another program inside DOSBox? You also mention the left arrow key specifically. The order in which the directions are configured is commonly up, down, left, right (and MK2 does this too). So does that mean …

Re: Run a DOS application directly from windows

himem provides XMS Hehe. Yeah, got my silly abbreviations mixed up. The XMS provided by DOSBox is still superior to the one in regular DOS because it doesn't actually require a device driver to be present in memory (save for the signature, of course) and can do copies on the host much quicker, …

Re: Run a DOS application directly from windows

None of those are required in DOSBox. In the configuration file, you can enable UMBs by setting umb=true (which is the default) in the [dos] section. himem.sys is not required, as DOSBox has its own superior EMS driver. DOS won't be loaded high because there is no separate DOS. And files=20 is …
