In pretty sure the Gravis Gamepad Pro requires drivers. There's actually a list of Gravis Gamepad compatibile games on Mobygames, and the oldest is from 1991. As those links indicate, you could run those games on a much, much slower machine if you wanted to – but everything would move very, very slowly and you'd have agonizing load times.

I don't even know what "STRINGS" is supposed to do. If you need DOSBox to act more like the original MS-DOS COMMAND.COM, then using 4DOS is usually a good idea. Just start 4DOS.COM and away you go. Of course, if you want to write text adventures, I hear Inform 7 is fantastic.
