Re: Jill of the Jungle Sound Effects

in DOS
All right, version 1.2d definitely plays the samples via DMA, thereby sounding clean on an SB16. Unfortunately, version 1.2d has a different problem, preventing it from being the perfect version: it uses the newer version of SBFMDRV (encapsulated in the exe file) that ignores velocities and gets the …

Re: Jill of the Jungle Sound Effects

in DOS
I only have 1.0 and 1.2b. Before attempting to patch the games for DMA, I first want to find the latest versions (1.2d, according to the ModdingWiki list) to see what goes on there. Edit: I have been sent version 1.2d of shareware Jill1, which also uses DMA. Registered version 1.2b used direct PCM …

doesn't PQ1VGA have some broken sound driver in a weird install program? I am not aware of any such problem. Explain. on Sorcerian, how does the game play sound effects? Is it always PC Speaker? Yes Also, is it possible to fix the problem (also in Sorc) where the music resources are misaligned by 1 …

Re: Jill of the Jungle Sound Effects

I find it difficult to believe that pure port writes would cause my motherboard to cause the issue. The issue is the SB16, not the motherboard. Happens here too with an AWE64 and an ASUS motherboard. I think the problem is that it's the SB16's dynamic low-pass filter (compared to the simple low- …

Re: Jill of the Jungle Sound Effects

in DOS
DMA 5-7 are only used when playing 16 bit samples. Jill of the Jungle does not play 16 bit samples. Actually, Jill2 and Jill3, from what I can tell, don't use DMA at all to play samples; they just use the peculiar method of sending PCM bytes directly to the DSP (using DSP command 0x10). The SB16 may …

They added 288 bytes to the front of the SQ collection EXE (compared to NRS exe). And use +2 offsets hundreds times. Don't know what else changed. No, my SIERRA.EXE is a patched version of the Space Quest Collection's. I added 32 bytes to the front (not 288), because there wasn't enough space to …

Re: Sierra/Dynamix sound driver hacking

in DOS
There was 1 unusual EXE bug - Cliffy's toolbox items would randomly disappear or not work. Replaced with SQ Collection EXE and it worked okay. Must be a placebo, as both are SCI version 1.001.068. If you replace SIERRA.EXE with the unpatched one, the 16-channel patch will be lost. The only problem …

Re: CGA Composite Mode under DOSBOX

Having disassembled PITSTOP2.EXE, it doesn't appear to be a hack, but quite deliberately adjusts itself for PCjr. The output still looks like a hack to me though... The colors in PSTOP2.EXE make too much sense, and don't simply correspond to the nybble patterns used in CGA mode 6 That would be …

Re: CGA Composite Mode under DOSBOX

Indeed, PITSTOP2.EXE is different. Given the differences observed with other DOS conversions ( Bruce Lee and Microsoft Decathlon , for example) it might be a good idea to compile a list of differences between booter versions and DOS conversions of each booter game. It's quite possible that there was …

Re: Sierra/Dynamix sound driver hacking

I've added a bit of a goodie index to the first post of the thread. Turbo Science also supports GM+PCM. however, there is still simultaneous MT-32/PCM sound-effect playback for the instances where both exist (as is the case with that pesky, "push-Brianna-off-of-the-swing" scream) I think it's that …

You people are so bright! You truly deserve this patch for The Incredible Machine , which does five things: Sound Blaster initializes on fast systems/at high "cycle" settings. Stereo FM sound. Selecting "General MIDI" now actually produces General MIDI music and sounds. Selecting "Roland MT-32" no …

Re: Sierra/Dynamix sound driver hacking

We have been given the honor of partaking in simultaneous General MIDI/Roland MT-32 and Sound Blaster sound whilst playing Quarky & Quaysoo's Turbo Science . Don't tell me you've never heard of this blockbuster game, which has the added benefit of being completely silent with the "General MIDI" …

Re: Sierra/Dynamix sound driver hacking

Continuing the immeasurably popular craze of fixing the mistakes of the most crapped-in-the-brain programmers ever to defile a floppy disk, please now accept an MT-32 plus Sound Blaster patch for " Rise of the Dragon ". The only digitized novelty is speech in the intro. Select Roland MT-32 for sound …

Re: Sierra/Dynamix sound driver hacking

I've only sent this out via private message so far. This patch for SQ5 allows for using all sixteen MIDI channels on General MIDI, so that the Glockenspiel and the Reverse Cymbal no longer get cut off by the Alert sound during the flight simulator sequence in the introduction. And drum map changes …

Re: Sierra/Dynamix sound driver hacking

The MTBLAST patch for Willy CD was never finished because Cloudschatze mentioned that although most things work, some sound effects were missing. I can't find anything wrong from listening to the introduction, so here goes. Report if you find something missing. EDIT: Uploaded new version. I thought …

Re: Sierra/Dynamix sound driver hacking

All right, dearly beloved. I don't know this game at all, so this may be completely wrong after the title sequence, but I can now get General MIDI sound with PCM samples. KRONDOR.EXE must be modified so that it even bothers to call up AUDBLAST.DRV with any RESOURCE.CFG entry other than SNDBLAST.DRV. …
