Re: The Anti-DOSBox Machine

Good choice! The P2B is one of the most famous BX chipset boards, it will provide a good base for the rest of the hardware. At work I still use a P2B-LS (a model with integrated SCSI controller and network interface), it has been running non-stop for six years and never crashed  Nice soundcard …

Re: (for those who own any) Creative Sound Blaster cards

in DOS
Is there any original Sound Blaster (16/AWE32/64) that is PCI ? Nope. What card would you recommend if I wanted to just make it 100% Sound Blaster compatible? Any soundcard will do, together with DOSBox or VDMSound  I used to have various non-Creative sound cards ISA in the past, and I had to …

Re: (for those who own any) Creative Sound Blaster cards

in DOS
Sorry, I didn't explain it clearly: The original SoundBlaster 16 (and AWE32/64) is completely different from a SoundBlaster 16 PCI. The SB16 PCI doesn't even have a chipset made by Creative, it uses the Ensoniq AudioPCI chip (Ensoniq was bought by Creative at some point). So the SB16/AWE32 DOS …

Re: (for those who own any) Creative Sound Blaster cards

in DOS
Unfortunately there is no way to get SoundBlaster compatibility for MS-DOS on a PCI sound card without some kind of emulation. This is because the original SoundBlaster works in a way that is not reproducible on a PCI bus. The DOS drivers for the SB16 PCI provide an emulation that should work OK …

Re: My oldschool rigs (updated again)

ah, this is good! wich version do you use? AGP or PCI? AGP, for two reasons: 1) My P5A board has an AGP slot that would otherwise be left unused. 2) V5 AGP is much cheaper than the PCI version, because fewer PCI models were produced, and they're much sought after by people who have either a very …

Re: My oldschool rigs (updated again)

Updated system specs again (see first post). The hardware for the K6 system is now complete, since I've swapped the Voodoo2 SLI setup for a Voodoo5. Voodoo2 SLI would be more "oldschool", but a Voodoo5 is far more reliable and has the benefit of the famous and unique 3dfx antialiasing 😜

Re: Audigy Dos Driver

in DOS
Never used those Audigy/SBLive/EMU10k DOS drivers, but I think the reason why both drivers won't work is the IRQ. It probably has to be set to 5 or 7 for the emulation to run. Try changing the IRQ in the Windows device settings for the card. Note that many games still will have trouble with the …

Re: Gamma Correction In Old Win9x Games?

in Windows
EDIT: I once heard tell of a screw in the back of CRT monitors that could control static charge, and that this could affect brightness. Anyone have any ideas? Most CRT monitors have a potentiometer inside to control the intensity of the cathode rays. Some people like to turn it up to compensate for …

Re: Dynamic Disc Overlay on 286?

in PC Emulation
Glad to hear it works! About the speed issue: Maybe it was just a problem with my 486 chipset. Before each disk access the whole thing seemed to stop for a second. I wonder though if there are any games that could cause problems with low-level disc access. Does Win 3.1 also need some kind of …

Re: Dynamic Disc Overlay on 286?

in PC Emulation
I'm not sure about this - even if DDO worked on your 286, disk access times would be horrible. It even bothered me when I used it on a 486. One possible method would be to take a bigger disk and partition it to only use about 500MB, but that's a rather awkward workaround. Another solution would be a …
