Re: Boulder Dash Series & PCJR

trebor wrote: The "original disk work fine" comment I presume is still in utlization with a 'real PCjr hardware' and not DOSBox emulation of the system. Correct. It's a bootable disk, so I don't know of a way to use the real disk with DOSBox.

Re: Boulder Dash Series & PCJR

Also, if you're using the cracked Super BoulderDash (includes BoulderDash 1 and 2) version that seems to be common there's apparently something wrong with it (at least the copy I have); even on real hardware it doesn't work correctly with PCjr graphics and sound while the original disk works fine.

Re: Ghostbusters

How does it look on real hardware? Looks fine (no flashing/corruption/color problems, etc); if I recall the game relies on 4.77Mhz 8088 timing (similar to California Games palette changing trick) to switch video modes between 160x200 (playfield) and 320x200 (scores) or something bizarre like that. …

Re: Problem using BIOS to display 256 colorset

I think the OP meant 256 text color attributes , and wanted to see intense background colors rather than blinking text. The high bit of the attribute can mean either blinking or intense background depending on a bit in one of the video registers, and the BIOS call wd pointed out can toggle it. Ah, …

Re: 7th Guest Sound..

I remember having a similar issue way back when on a real system. For me the problem occurred with a Sound Blaster Pro (original opl2 version) installed and selected for digital sound effects. The work around was to select just Sound Blaster for sound effects in the 7th Guest setup. I never found if …

Re: Bad graphic in Lemmings

I find it odd that there is EGA video coming from a VGALEMMI binary Actually this makes sense; both EGA and VGA versions run in mode 0Dh (320x200 16 color), the only difference in the VGA version is it uses a different color palette where the EGA version uses the standard 16 color palette. Although …

Re: IBM PS/1 Audio Card.

Space Quest 4 has the distinction of not having Tandy support, so it's the only one that gives you (sort of) something new. If you want to hear Space Quest 4 with Tandy sound this is supported in the 16 color version of the game; from memory I think it also worked fine if you copied the …

Re: A Tandy only game...

I'm not positive but I think the problem with this game is it appears to switch video modes near the bottom of the screen every time the screen refreshes. So the top half of the screen is in 160x200 mode, and the bottom in 320x200; you get low res blocky graphics up top, and sharper medium res text …

Re: PC Jr Cart Support

Right, that's what I was referring to; this trick wasn't possible on other systems which had a grand total of 16 possible colors. Atari had a total of, what, 128? colors so by utilizing that trick the gradient could be made smoother than was possible on some more powerful systems.

Re: PC Jr Cart Support

No other version of Pitfall II has the opening background where the sun sets, difficult enough for a 2600 to do, but presumably easier for other systems. On some systems I don't know if I'd call that easier; the Atari systems are more flexible palette wise, commodore/colecovision and other systems …

Re: Activision Carts & PC Jr = "Screen Jitters"

River Raid doesn't work out of the box for me, as it hangs in some in 0x200 loop or so, thus i used a debugger enabled version (maybe that's why it works). I wonder if this is because River Raid requires a joystick; I had the same problem (the game would hang) when I had joystick emulation in …

Re: PCjr emulation (CVS)

I tried Maniac Mansion on a real PCjr and it came up in CGA 4-color mode; so yeah, for whatever reason that game doesn't detect the PCjr as supporting 16 colors. I've gotten a few .jrc games to work correctly with DosBox, but others just crash; I'm guessing there's still some incomplete emulation or …

Re: DosBox SDL error

Hmm, interesting; I ran the DirectX 9 installer again, and it recreated all of the files I deleted. I tried DosBox again and it is still working. DXDIAG's error message was pretty vague and didn't say what the problem was; unfortunately I didn't note the exact message, but it was something along the …

DosBox SDL error

Somewhere along the line I managed to create an error where I can't run dosbox on my Windows 98 machine; everything had been working fine, then I installed DirectX 9 (an update from I think version 8 ) and now I get the error "Exit to error: Can't init SDL DirectInputDevice::SetCooperativeLevel: …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

otherwise it wouldn't make any sense. well, I was quite surprised at how much of a difference there was depending on the monitor used, so even if that wouldn't make sense already stranger things have happened :) With hercules the display stretched the 720x384 resolution by quite a lot from what I …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Bless my old ET4000! This of course means that all those 4-color screenshots on MobyGames are wrong and should all be replaced. :)I think several picture editors have batch processing functions, so that shouldn't be a problem. Yeah, I've been thinking about whether or not to worry about this …

Re: QFG3 (and general Sierra issues)

You can raise the Details manually but if you restart the game it will drop again. KQ5 and KQ6 will run with maximum Details if you set the CPU Cycles to 9000, but QGF3's Details bar will always be in the middle, and it doesn't matter what the CPU Cycles value is (it can even be as high as 40,000). …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

I think the appearance of more than 4 colors or the wrong 4 colors is just limitations of taking digital pictures of the monitor; I had the same problem in my photos, the colors in the photos don't look exactly right as reflections off the monitor, ambient room light, moire patterns due to the …
