Re: MCGA already supported in dosbox

The emulation is so good that I am not even sure if there is anything that can be done on MCGA that wouldn't work on VGA. correct, VGA implemented the two MCGA modes identically. Most all early VGA games were really just MCGA. DOSBox doesn't "support" MCGA in that if it was truly in MCGA mode, EGA …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

As usual I tried some pictures; here's KQ on the Tandy CM-5. And as usual the color doesn't turn out terribly great with a digital camera. I had an opportunity to buy a 5153 display rather cheap, but I already have so many displays I couldn't figure out where I could possibly put the thing so I …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Is it the original IBM 5153 Color Display? I'm asking because I'm still not certain if color 6 is supposed to be "brown" or "dark yellow". Everyone seems to agree that it's brown, but I have my reasons to believe it should be dark yellow. Is KQ1 in "RGB" mode yellow or brown? No, I don't have a …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

I don't understand how there could be differences, other than the font, between the IBM PC 5150 and the Tandy 1000, considering they use the same exact IBM CGA graphics card, copy of King's Quest and composite video monitor/TV. I don't understand it either, but it's there; it's not a huge …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

ok, here's the shots I got of Microsoft Decathlon: I think the source of much confusion on my part earlier is that the Tandy seems to be causing more trouble than just the font; the colors are slightly different too. it's not noticable in all of the colors, the ones that stand out the most are brown …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Unless you calibrated both your TV set and capture card with something like video essentials, your TV, capturing device and digital camera are likely to change the colors more than another CGA card can. You wrote that in real life it looks more like MobyGames than on that digital camera picture; …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Ok, I dove into my closet of insanely numerous machines and can offer the following observations: Yes, but I don't believe anyone has confirmed actually hearing it via Tandy DAC yet (although I could be mistaken) I tried this out on a Tandy 1000 RL; the "Where am I?" speech and other sampled sounds …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Can you tell me what exactly did you change in MESSUI.INI to achieve this effect? I don't know what messui.ini setting it would be; in the macmess gui though I click on the options button, and there are several choices under renderer; software or opengl, and a checkbox for "smoothing", etc...I …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

I compared King's Quest IV in DosBox (I used a CVS version circa mid october) and on my CGA card, and DosBox does use the wrong colors for this; it should be blue-white-red-cyan, DosBox displays as blue-brown-red-green. A screenshot is below from a CGA card (this was done with a digital camera, so …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Looks like there's a mistake in the wikipedia article; SCI1.1 games used EGA's 640x200 mode, not 640x350 (or the one's I've played at least). Probably this is rather convenient; the width is doubled so use two EGA pixels to represent a single MCGA pixel.

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Whoever put it on some "Abandonware" site probably just put in whatever driver he could find; I've seen such a messy version of "Jones in the Fast Lane" as well. Do you know what video drivers the original 16 color version of Jones in the Fast Lane came with? I don't have my original disks anymore, …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

You and other people on this thread say that the AGI composite mode is displayed in b&w on CGA RGB monitors and the white/cyan/pink palette seen in your (now removed) SQ1 moby shot is what you get on VGAs, and MESS seems to approve it, but I find it very weird, because I played most AGI games on an …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

All SCI0 games offer two CGA options: CGA with RGB Monitor - 2 Colors CGA with RGB Monitor - 4 Colors not all; I have several which did not include the 4 color option. Of course, you could simply copy the driver from another game which had it and the results were fine, but some games didn't ship …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

That so-called "alternative palette" seen in the SQ3 screenshot is really designed for the composite video mode. yeah, and it's botched at that; whatever trick they're using (bypassing bios and setting the registers directly?) it doesn't work correctly on newer video cards. In composite mode you …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

According to the screenshots you sent me, the Tandy's output is basically like the CGA's, only the hue is 120 degrees off (i.e. you've got to set the algorithm's hue control to +120 to make it look like the Tandy. I've verified it with that "Blue Angels" game you mentioned). I guess the PCjr one …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Ah, even if you used the CGA card in the Tandy 1000, the game cannot use the CGA Character Generator ROM, which houses the text characters but only for the text modes. Instead it uses the characters as stored in the BIOS. On a true PC, the game would take its text from the IBM BIOS. On a Tandy 1000 …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

I don't understand how this is possible on an RGB monitor. If it does, then how does it get the regular text characters to display properly? Those characters are designed for the 320x200 modes, graphics or text. In a 160x200 mode they would be stretched to double size, just like in the 640x200 mode …
