Re: Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

I was messing with B=... on my wife's computer, too, and nothing I did would move the page frame from it's C800 location. I also noticed something else. If you put the line "echoconfig" in your config.nt and then run mem or whatever from the command prompt, it'll tell you the EMM line in config.nt …

Re: Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

Well, there's good news and there's not so good news. Disabling DOS support for my USB keyboard has freed up the D000 to D7FF area. That's 32K more UMBs, if I'm not mistaken. It shifted the RAID's ROM down, too, and it now occupies D000 to D3BF. That leaves all of D3C0 to EFFF free, which would be …

Re: Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

Well, after searching my BIOS and playing with a DOS boot disk all day, I've found some things out. 1) My BIOS doesn't have an option for shadowing, so I can't turn it off. My old motherboard had it, so I know what it looks like. Must be part of Abit trying to leave behind legacy stuff. 2) The …

Re: Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

Good idea, Vlad. I've removed UMB support in config.nt and I now get this: A000-CEFFh 192,512 Sys 0008h < DOS > CF01-CFFEh 4,064 Free 0000h < none > D000-DBFFh 49,152 Sys 0008h < DOS > DC01-DFFFh 16,368 Free 0000h < none > Still no room for a page frame, as you can see. I tried setting DOS=LOW or …

Re: Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

I've been messing with UMBPCI for a few days using Virtual PC. Aside from Virtual PC 5 being rather awesome, UMBPCI is very cool. Works well. And I've gained a better understanding of things related to HMA. Which made me look at my DOS prompt configuration on Win2K. Running MI.COM, I saw something …

Re: Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

Sorry if I got confusing. Sometime I get a little long-winded and use a few too many commas. :D I am talking about EMS under Win2K, but was also mentioning that I was also having difficulties under actual DOS. Yeah, it's a dual boot, but I did it in an odd way so that I could use NTFS on my C drive …

Re: Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

I know. I was talking about that old DOS game I had that used >600KB conventional. Anyway, I've tried MoM and it complains there's no EMS, so I don't know. I guess I'm just SOL. I think I've got an old 486 sitting around here, but it's such a pain...

Re: Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

Well, I was talking about EMM386 under true DOS (which I have on a seperate hard drive). I've got enough conventional memory under Win2K to run most stuff, and I know how to disable CD-ROM extentions and stuff to get more. But wait a minute, there, Snover... Mem isn't reporting that you have any EMS …

Re: Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

No problems on your end with the RAID, eh Snover? Dang. Well, there goes that theory. I am pretty sure it's the RAID's ROM that's eating all the UMBs in DOS, but I guess that doesn't explain Win2K. The only constant between all of my Win2K installs has been my sound card (forgot that I kept that, …

Re: Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

Thanks for all the links, Stiletto, but all of the long ones seem to have been truncated and bring up error 404s. I suppose if I wasn't feeling kinda lazy, I could hunt down the pages you linked myself... The EPoX link worked, though, and I see what you're talking about there. That's the exact error …

Cannot enable EMS under Win2K...

I posted about this a long time back on the original forums (Bravenet), but perhaps someone's found something out since then. Prepare for a longwinded explanation... ;) I cannot, for the life of me, get EMS under Win2K. I used to just think it was something funky up with my hardware, my motherboard …
