Re: Copy protection mechanisms, this is for CRC 2005

That is utter crap, unless its a massively multiplayer game which will eventually cease its existence. If the user doesn't want to play it on a connected computer and the game does not require an on-line connection, then he should not have to ever go online. Even Microsoft XP's Product Activation …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Oops, my mistake. I meant to say from software developer to developer, as some actually optimized their 320 graphics for color composite while others did not. As far as graphics using text modes games go, I only know of seven: Bricks/Wrecking Ball (Seem to be same game) ICON (ICON demo) Moon Bugs …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

The Spellcaster games are really using high-resolution EGA modes, @ 640x350. That resolution isn't very suitable for integral scaling on modern displays. Even though letterboxing would result, DOSBox should extend its scalers to modes containing 640 and 720 horizontal pixels. Also, I would prefer to …

Re: A Vision of a Perfect PC

Thanks for the tip. As much as I want a PC, I may be better off with an XT, first BIOS. There are six principal reasons for this. First, It has eight slots, enough for just about everything. Second, it has the power supply to power them all. Third, it is highly likely to come with a 10MB hard drive, …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

The screenshot answered my border question. I can say in the 320 graphic modes, if you change the background color you change the border to the same color as well. In the 640 graphic modes, since you can't change the background color (its always black), the border will always be black too.

Re: A Vision of a Perfect PC

I have a 32" TV for a composite monitor in the same room. IBM never put out a color composite monitor for the PC (they did have a composite amber screen in the Portable and a green screen for the Convertible.) 100% IBM is the theme of the system, so I would have to use an AppleColor IIe or IIc for a …

Re: A Vision of a Perfect PC

The reason for the 720KB drive is to make file transfers from my main PC, where I have my booter images stored, to the IBM PC, which will be in the basement. I can't use a null-modem cable to transfer, especially considering the smallness of the drive. Also, I have some booter images that require a …

A Vision of a Perfect PC

Never have I had so clear a vision of what my perfect PC will be. I see this PC and am struck in awe about its potential. It is so right, so perfect that all intelligent people will gush with praise about the system I built: I start with an IBM PC Model 5150. The motherboard will contain the 10/27/ …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Not to get off the subject, but I have a question. CGA monitors generally underscanned the image, leaving black borders on the sides of the image. In text modes, the CGA allowed the programer to change the border color, but I have never seen a provision in the graphics modes, at least for IBM's card …

Re: ... An Idea ...

Proper floppy drive emulation and a robust imaging standard will solve almost any disk based copy protection. The people at the Software Preservation Society have been successfully dealing with Amgia copy protected disks. Many of those disks have protection far beyond any PC Booter. Also, once we …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

It is slightly unclear from the wikipedia article which version of SCI Jones in the Fast Lane uses. If the 16-Color Disk Version uses SCI0, does the 256-Color Disk Version use SCI1 or a SCI hybrid? I would think that SCI1 interpreter does support the use of vector graphics drawing tecniques. Quest …
