What is quite odd is that it cuts off left and top. Like it samples the full screen and then output only the lower right part of it. Usually if a device just samples 350 lines of a 400 line resolution only the top 350 lines are displayed.

Thats summarizing the general problem. While TFTs sampling at 720x400 is targeted for text mode, most of the games use some 640 dividable horizontal resolution. There 720 pixel sampling is suboptimal as it introduces a moiree effect in horizontal direction. I have not found a TFT with VGA input yet …
