Re: Games that sound best with GUS?

based on my own experience with the common, AMF-supporting players. AMF format significantly limits the choice of players, hence the conversion to MOD. Aside from the point I was getting at regarding the many possibilities of external players and add-on effects, I actually prefer to listen to the …

Re: Games that sound best with GUS?

The in-game spatialization effect provided by the Asylum Sound System isn't reproduced by any of these players Which players? I didn't specify. There are almost countless module player programs, each offering different features, and thus different "renditions" of a given module's sound. There are …

Re: Games that sound best with GUS?

For critical listening of Crusader No Remorse's tracker music outside of the game, some players support the AMF (Asylum Music Format) files directly, or the AMF2MOD utility can convert to 8-channel MOD that many players support. Most of the AMF files are in the SOUND subdir on the cdrom, but the …

Re: Double-height and double-width

This makes me afraid of introducing any serious changes because they will be increasingly difficult to merge with new official revisions. It's a good idea to consider the maintenance aspect in the approach to any patch. Refactoring/rewriting large sections of existing code tends to make maintenance …

Re: Double-height and double-width

I don't think the rendering cares if the 400 lines come from a 400 line source or a doubled 200 line source, so odd-line update regions can occur for either source. I suppose it's not convenient for your purpose , so the usual choices apply: work with it, work around it, or change it. My advice to …

Re: Double-height and double-width

With the machine type vgaonly these modes seem indistinguishable Probably because there wasn't a need to distinguish at the render level, and I wonder if that isn't just as true for your purpose. In any case, it should be distinguishable at the draw level, and perhaps you can pass an indication …

Re: swap floppy images on the fly

MOUNTed drives cannot be used after booting. Rather than using ImDisk, you have to IMGMOUNT the floppy images in DOSBox. Also, you'll probably need to use a vanilla SVN build of DOSBox because 0.74 does not support mounting multiple floppy images.

Re: Double-height and double-width

With the machine type vgaonly it is 320x400, whereas with svga_s3 it is 320x200. Yes, vgaonly double-scans 200 lines to 400 lines, as I earlier explained. Since vgaonly sees 320x200 as 320x400 one should expect that all update rectangles (sdl.updateRects) will have an even height (divisible by two) …

Re: Double-height and double-width

Veil of Darkness, like other Event Horizon games, uses 320x400 for the intro and cut-scenes, but "normal" 320x200 for gameplay. Not entirely normal because a VGA hardware split-line is used so the lower window of the UI can be dragged up and down with the mouse, but dunno if that's responsible for …

Re: GUS patch for Turrican 2: anyone?

in DOS
Where did you find it though, thought I'd used some serious Google-fu? The Patches Scrolls used to be a good site to find patches before it changed owners, but sometimes an archived page can be mined for useful info. The old download link is not working, but it told me the name of the archive, so I …

Re: GUS patch for Turrican 2: anyone?

in DOS
The patch here may not be the one you have in mind, as it's not difficult to find. If you're trying to get rid of the distorted sound with GUS, everything I've read suggests using SB16 instead, and not just for DOSBox.

Re: Games that sound best with GUS?

sndwv wrote: My original question wasn't specifically about DOSBox's emulation (although that is what I use) Yes, but games that sound best (or not) with GUS in DOSBox won't necessarily do so elsewhere. 😉

Re: Double-height and double-width

Is it ever possible that dblh should be false and dblw true? When? Absolutely. I wouldn't say it's super common, but some games use mode 13h tweaked to 320x400. Blood & Magic, Threat, and DreamForge/Event Horizon games (Ravenloft series, Veil of Darkness, The Summoning, et al.) are examples that …

Re: Decent composite CGA games not available in VGA?

I don't think there's a lot of overlap between CGA composite and VGA games, unless you include remakes. For example, King's Quest was (unofficially) remade for VGA, but the games are distinctly different experiences, and you'll have to decide for yourself if it's worthwhile to play through both. …
