Seeing as you have the cards, why not compare them yourself? That way you can decide for yourself and won't end up slave to someone else's aesthetics or pedantry.

I would check: - floppy drive ribbon cable inserted right way round - floppy drive type set correctly in bios - hard disk geometry - ie. heads/cylinders/etc - in bios

I daresay it must have been a bit faster, it just never caught my imagination. No zing - I never turned it on and thought "wow I LOVE this machine!". It was more "pfft, this is so slow... damn processor looks like it's going to catch fire... chipset uses all the resources my ISA cards want....meh …

I had one but I threw it away. I used an A1333 with it. I thought the combo was slow and hardly an upgrade from a dual-P3/866/SCSI/RAMBUS workstation I had before that. Also the impression I got was that motherboards at this stage had started to implement chipsets that used a lot of resources …

Nice, using CBID for STPGNT and HLT knocked a couple of degrees off my XP2000 temperature. Qbic HSF is still damn noisy though 😜 .

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind - now you mention it I had problems with ACPI on some other machine - but it looks like the problem is now solved. Lucky the system installs 98 so fast. Seems to have been because I had not installed directx. The nforce2 driver said something or other would not work …

Yep, I'm using the 4.27 drivers for the nforce2, and the USB2 drivers from the Abit website. I also unthinkingly installed the RAID driver, though the hardware is disabled in the bios.

All i know is that a gf6600 or 6800 needs driver version 66.93 [or presumably earlier] for AvP to be playable. Not heard of any other games being similarly affected. With late drivers you get no real display - a few bright patches and that's about it iirc.

I did miss my 440MX when I replaced it with an FX5200, but its so long ago I can't remember why. FX5200 was a mistake for me - I thought "higher number = better". Replaced with the 4800se. I've found a ti4800se to be an awful lot better than fx5200 for games, and i don't seem to get issues in later …

Aw this is embarassing. There is an external wavetable slider in the volume control panel; it was on mute. Thanks for the advice anyhow, it confirmed I was using the right settings and helped me track down the problem. Didn't realise the wavetable had a control of its own.

The MPU port works fine in my experience, much better than the buggy Creative ISA card MPU ports. I have a Gigabyte GA-686BX board with an SL356 PII 350 processor, marked (c) 1997. I tried all different settings for the multiplier [=every combination of the 4 switches] and none of them made any difference to what it booted up as. It would however boot as a 233MHz, by using the 66MHz bus speed.

Would bad capacitors be a possibility I wonder? I know there was a period when there was a particular problem with capacitors in a lot of boards [sort of Socket 370 and early Socket A times], which isn't relevant here. But older boards may eventually suffer the same problem of decaying caps.
