Lemmings 2 - setting up memory in DOS

in DOS
Can someone help please? I couldn't see anything specific on Lemmings under DOS on the forums [but let me know if there's another post ansering my questions]. I'm trying to run Lemmings 2 under IBM DOS 5.0 but it won't start and gives me error messages. It seems it needs more memory free and the …

Re: Parallel port CD ROMs in windows

Well, that may have been worth trying but the windows drivers are no longer an issue. I managed to force a molex connector the wrong way round into another CD drive today [I thought this was a stiff one, ha ha ha], which immediately blew it. Mmm, nice smell... So out of interest [aka desparation] I …

Re: Parallel port CD ROMs in windows

I can't remember, but I probably used Win95 fdisk. The hard disk is 6gb, set up as: primary FAT partition = C drive extended partition with a couple of FAT partitions/drives within that [and a few others for linux] In "command only mode", fdisk sees the primary partition and the extended. but does …

Re: Parallel port CD ROMs in windows

OK, thanks - I have now got a suitable-looking driver from driverguide. It's only a DOS driver, here's what happens. I am running Win95 on this laptop. - the line the driver puts in config.sys contains a lot of switches which stop the driver loading [as in, if I take them out the mscdex line in …

Parallel port CD ROMs in windows

Hi I've just got an old Cumana external CD ROM that connects via the printer port, but I don't know how to get windows 95 to recognise it - hardware detection finds nothing [the CD drive does work]. Would be good to get this working as my old laptop doesn't have a CD ROM, nor USB ports. Any advice …

Re: Dos Box ?'s

I don't know many of these games. Doom 1 and 2 and Duke Nukem 3D would run with any of the cards you suggest, and lesser cards [eg. 4mb S3 Trio, even a 1mb ATi Mach 64 I seem to recall]. Have seen somewhere on this forum someone suggest a TNT2 plus V2 SLI for maximum compatibility.

Re: How to Use ISA Midi Cards Remotely

Maybe off topic [in which case apologies], but I have two PCs I want to link up. A p3 machine running Linux, which we use to edit music scores [using Rosegarden] - this software produces MIDI output and you can play through a suitable keyboard. But it's a hassle having the KB connected all the time. …

Re: Dos Box ?'s

Probably best to start with a list of games you want to play, and any hardware bits [like particular cards] you want to use. For example if you want to network the PC, to run V2s in SLI and to have a Gravis Ultrasound and AWE32 you will probably need 3-4 PCI slots and 3-4 ISA slots, depending on …

Floppy lacks spring

This may just be my bad memory, wonder if anyone knows better. Just got a 5.25 floppy drive, works fine but.... - it doesn't eject disks when you open the latch - I can't remember if they used to. Just wondering if mine is bust or if that's how they were...? Feel weird not knowing cos for a few …

Apache Longbow and Voodoo cards

in Windows
I've just got a copy of Apache Longbow, and tried running on my Win98 machine. Software version runs fine, but I want to try to 3dfx version. Machine has 2 Voodoo 2's running in SLI. I've installed the 3dfx-enabled version of Longbow, I can change the program settings [under Preferences] but when I …

Hard disk hassles

I've got a machine I use for old games: GA5AX, K6/3, Voodoo 2 SLI, S3 Trio, EWS64XL, SW60XG, Quantum FireBall and a CD ROM. Now I put a second HD in [IBM Deskstar]. It runs OK for a while, then the Quantum sounds like someone hitting a tin lid with a spanner. So I take it out, and try it in another …

Re: Gravis Ultrasound ACE

I've had another go with Windows 98, but it hasn't worked - the ACE seems to do nothing and the SB16 doesn't do sound effects in DOS games, only music. There is no conflict - the SB16 is IRQ 5, DMA 1, 280 and the ACE is IRQ 7, DMA 3, 240. So I have deleted Windows 98 and installed IBM DOS 5.02 [ …

Gravis Ultrasound ACE

I've got an old Gravis Ultrasound ACE, where the ACE means Audio Card Enhancer. It's supposed to work with Sound Blasters, and I've put mine in a system with an SB16 [CT1740 I think]. The GUS software crashes when I try to set it up. I'm assuming this is a hardware conflict, but running "install" …
