Re: What computer related book are you reading now?

in Milliways
Finally got round to reading Masters of Doom that I bought years ago. Feels like a film script. Similarly finally got round to Eduard Castranova's Virtual Worlds. Only about half way; fascinating for a WoW player to see the same issues in minds then as now [WoW had a few hundred thousand subscribers …

Re: Is win2000 as great, as every claims it to be?

in Milliways
Back in the day, though win 2000 upset me a bit because of issues with dos games [kinda why i ended up here ofc] i loved it because to me it was clean and uncluttered, and stable - far fewer bsods than i got with 98 or 95, and a lot better for gaming that nt4 had been.

Re: Bored of vintage computing?

I get this with anything - if you overdo it you can get burnt out, punch dunk, whatever you want to call it; the romance cools off a bit. I've been in a cool phase with old gear for a year or two. Having been round this particular block a few times, this time round I down-sized a bit, logged my …

Re: New OS/2 version imminent

in Milliways
Their website suggests it's about supporting current users, rather than changing the world or even being a toy os. Not immediately clear what hardware is supported. It mentions windows 3.1 and dos applications, and things being ported from linux. Doesn't sound like a windows 10 substitute nor is it …

Re: Do you ever

I either just stare at the screen when installation is going on, or go and do something in the real world instead. I stopped playing solitaire once they made it on-line with adverts and rankings and achievements or whatever it was they did - I forget, the insane rage that followed that discovery …

Re: Diablo II and Glide wrappers: what's the point?

in Milliways
There is at least one Diablo 2 game object that does not display correctly in directx but does in glide. Kurast Docks, in the middle somewhere there is a blue sphere on a stand. After a certain quest completion this changes to a dagger if you are using glide but not if you are using directx. Not a …

Re: Why no much attention to mac/amiga on this site ?

in Milliways
yeah there were plenty with mac versions [warcraft 1-2, diablo 1/2, starcraft, quake 1/2, etc] and others that were arguably clones of other games [barrack, apeiron, mars rising etc etc], but marathon was original in some way [i don't know, i hardly played it enough to tell]. but mac games often …

Re: Win10 Tips, Tricks, and Workarounds

in Milliways
Interesting about the network issue, I have two pcs which have developed intermittent "no internet" problems at various times in the past year. Different hardware. Rebooting usually fixed it. I could see no pattern. One pc runs vista ultimate, eventually I just turned off the onboard LAN and used a …

Re: What makes real hardware.. "real"?

On average you may be able to get a Pentium to perform in the ballpark of a 386, but at a lower level you'll see that some parts will run faster than on a 386 while others run slower. This CRT scanlines & phosphor bleed THe way old monitors change resolution, none of this temporary blanking and …

Re: Warcraft Adventures recreation, looking for help

in Milliways
I suppose a lot of video game franchises are like this, but I find it interesting how Blizzard manage to keep rehashing their storylines across different attempts, with the same characters reappearing over and over. Mind you a lot of the less-important character names only started to stick for me …

Re: Vintage hipster's.... I have mentioned them before.

in Milliways
Phil is by far a retro hipster in my book. He is using the stuff he has, and not making any display out of it and bashing how bad the stuff is at the same time. Solely owning the stuff, because it falls under the term: "Retro" or "Vintage". Nor do I think that anyone here on Vogons are such a …

Thanks, can I just say that I'm very grateful to the time you and Aideka has spent looking at this - it's very kind of you and it's certainly improved my understanding of what might be going on here. One of the reasons I put up the thread was that I was trying to decide whether there was a way of …
