1. chapter: I agree 2. chapter: usb ethernet connect might be worth it. Remember that I can’t access my rasp via wifi from my 386. I also experienced that etherDFS isn’t routable and even can’t survive wifi to lan „conversion“ 3. chapter: of course true my fault

My default smb share runs on a quite low end openwrt router (netgear 6220) with a usb stick w/ ext4 connected

UPS sorry don’t know about SPI, I plug into onto the gpio pins all 40 and that’s it. No driver no manual enablement or so. Using samba via the raspberry it’s more than 2-3mb/s accesses from a modern pc. Unfortunately I just lent out my raspberry so at the moment no testing possible. I am anyway …

Thanks a lot some infos I missed. The pi is connected via Ethernet to the retro via usb/eth hat (these plug ontop via gpio to get more usb and Ethernet connectors). The raspberry acts as Ethernet accesspoint via dnsmasq. All 16BIT waitstates are lowest selectable Maybe this helps a bit

Sure: - generic details see signature - 3com 509b nw using the 905b using the 3c509.com packet driver - 15mhz ISA - Netdrive Host = raspberry pi Zero 2w with latest 64Bit Debian rasp OS - image on USB stick fat formatted (for etherDFS) Hm nothing more comes to mind currently. It indeed seemed to be related to the ide cable. A second one solved the issue although it once occurred again as well. Therefor I assume it’s related to the cable, it’s shielding, possible interferences due to very non optimal cable-routing. Kabelführung. Br

Indeed interesting questions. Regarding access times: most benchmarks couldn’t measure the random access times correctly on the scsi (showing just 0 or similar). Speedsys is one of the few that seems to be able. scsi 10k around 7,5ms and my latest ide drive reach around 16ms … yes quite a difference …
