Very true both the K7 and K8 were something really impressive when they came out. I can only imagine the panic at Intel when they realise AMD had actually bettered them.

I guess that the bad decisions on both sides(architecture wise) are mostly based on marketing related pressure. I can't remember 100% but the "deep" pipeline/high clock approach of the P4 was a decision to totally "demolish" AMD on the MHz side and didn't originate from the development team.
