Re: Comeback for AMD?

Funny you mention Crysis 2. That's exactly one of those games where AMD's current GPU architecture was hurt, but the generation after that actually outperformed even nVidia's offerings at the time. Why? Because AMD's early tessellators sucked a great deal. They then copy-pasted 4 of them into the …

Just wait for Gigabyte, MSI and Sapphire to kick out some good quality cards, possibly with an extra 6pin power connector …

Re: AMD ZEN, what do you folks think?

I'm expecting that it will probably end up having something similar to Sandy Bridge IPC, better power efficiency, while offering 8-core CPUs at or slightly below the price of Intel's current high-end 4-core consumer CPUs. I think that will be enough to make it an exciting CPU for many people. …

This site just posted a bunch of rumours about nVidia's 1060, including an alleged launch date of July 7th: http://videocardz.com/61753/nvidia-geforce-gt … ter-than-rx-480 If this is true, then RX480 is pretty much stillborn.

Re: Comeback for AMD?

Nice! Eager to see the first reviews of the 1060 😀 @ Deep Thought You make a good point regarding noise and temperatures. Like with the RX 480, it seems a proper dual fan cooler will improve both.

It seems inconceivable that they could engineer such a complex GPU and then screw up the power regulation of the board. Could be another sign of the board being pushed beyond its originally intended power consumption.

8pin? Yeah two more gounds will certainly help a lot. Nope. See here: http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html Yes, in theory it's just 'two extra ground pins'... However, the point is: 1) With these extra pins, the card will detect that the proper connector is connected. 2) The …

Re: Comeback for AMD?

I think it's clear what happened with the 480. They wanted to, at all costs, end up competitive with the 970 and maybe used voltages and clock speeds that are not ideal for perf / watt. The 470 is likely dialed down enough to have better perf / watt. They do talk about 110 W. I haven't seen any …

I have an FX 8320 turned 8350 with some undervolt and I've been pretty happy with it for the most part. I do want more single-thread performance though, so I will be looking into Zen. I think the most optimistic views on Zen is that it will land at around Haswell performance, which IMO is pretty …

Pascal CUDA probably won't be ready for rendering apps until August or later, making 980Ti still relevant in that regard. My bets are 980 Ti will still beat at least the 1070 in Octane Bench Why would you think that? I see no reason to assume Pascal would perform significantly worse than Maxwell in …

They seem to think the problem is with with the cards' …
