Re: Comeback for AMD?

Well, I'm not the dev so... https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=54601&sid=c64f5395a6d898f195712fdeb1f98cd6&start=20#p280269 I have no idea what Octane even is, or what it's supposed to do... but if it doesn't work, they're doing something wrong. Pascal does not require specific …

And is it so strange that adding full support for new gen hardware to a piece of production-grade software (I don't know how large/small their team is) would take some time? They've just released a major new version, and it seems that the CUDA 8 toolkit is not even a final release yet. Yes, that is …

All you need to run CUDA apps is a CUDA driver (which comes as a standard part of the GeForce driver set). The toolkit is for *development*, end-users don't need it. OK, the OP of that linked thread: a user buys a 1080, installs CUDA 8.0, runs OR3, and then finds out that the card is not detected/ …

OK, the OP of that linked thread: a user buys a 1080, installs CUDA 8.0, runs OR3, and then finds out that the card is not detected/supported by the program. That simple really. For _whatever_ reason. Like I said, that program apparently does something weird somewhere. Just download GPU Caps Viewer …

Re: AMD ZEN, what do you folks think?

Honestly, everything anyone has to say is completely speculative. Indeed. I haven't commented on Zen anywhere yet, because I simply don't have enough info to make anything other than wild guesses. And what's the point in doing that? I will always root for the underdog to the extent that I can. I …

I'm looking forward to it. I enjoyed my FX 8120 and have since upgraded to an FX 8370. My only hope is that they make at least one chip for the G34 server socket. +1 also it would be awesome if they made a Zen chip for am3+, I doubt it will happen but man I would love the opportunity to drop a new …

There was another followup article yesterday: http://wccftech.com/article/radeon-rx-480-reducing-voltage-increasing-efficiency/ Undervolted RX480 4GB version, consumes about 112W, reaching better clocks too. Optimizing for efficiency might be the answer for RX480. Launch first, optimize later... :/ …

Re: Comeback for AMD?

I think that the 480 has the potential to be like Chrysler's K platform. Was it the biggest, fastest, or most powerful? No. It was never intended to be. Was it affordable? Yes. Did it offer good enough performance for most use cases? Yes. Was it extremely boring? Abolutely. The entire point of the …

nVidia didn't innovate with PhysX. They bought it then converted it to shaders. That *is* the innovation. PhysX ran on a separate PPU when they bought it. NVidia was the first and still only one to deliver a practical realtime physics solution that is GPU-accelerated. They also didn't just 'convert …

I just don't understand why people want dual GPU setups. The framerate is meaningless with AFR induced latency. Though I hear that D3D 12 allows developers to use multi-GPU without AFR so maybe there's hope in the future.

Here is AMD's solution to the power consumption issue: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10469/amds-tuesday-radeon-rx-480-update-new-driver-by-late-thursday It seems to be two-fold: 1) Shift the excess power draw from the PCI-e slot to the 6-pin connector. Still out-of-spec, but potentially less risky. …

Re: Comeback for AMD?

Performance and power consumption look really good and the price is more reasonable than the R9 Nano was. Estimates from some journalists put the 480 at a little faster than a 280x or 380x, but with only one six pin connector, that is pretty amazing. It makes me wonder how powerful a low end Polaris …

If you read the article linked, you would see that they didn't have to act. There was no threat of harm to anyone's computer as a result of it running out of spec. According to Tom's, a healthy ATX PSU will still be able to provide the power draw through the PCIe slot without any risk of burning …
