I bet if you would have dropped the multiplier to 5.5x you would have seen a speed boost. The 6x multiplier was buggy for some reason and drops performance. Are you positive that it's not just your copy of the game being broken/corrupt? Do you have another machine where this exact copy works?

Privateer 2 was notorious for crashing constantly and being very buggy and unfinished overall. The CPU could be an issue, I don't think I ever tried it on such a fast CPU. Does the board actually support the 5.5 multiplier and K6-2 550 model? Did you configure the jumpers properly? If you can find a newer BIOS, it might help flashing it. Also, try setting the multiplier to 1.5x or 2x, that sometimes works on boards that don't support high enough multipliers.

Make a photo of the "POST string", it shows up on the bottom of screen of the bios when ram is being counted usually, this is a good way to identify a motherboard

Drop the clock 50mhz, past experience says that if it’s overheating lowering the clock will fix it, if lowering the clock has no affect you have something else going on
