My board ran pretty stable at 50MHz with a x3 multi @ 150MHz vs 40mhz x4 @ 160MH. I got slightly better benchmarks results at the 150MHz BUT I had to set DRAM speed to "slower" in the BIOS else I had no stability. So with these DRAM settings 150MHz was marginally faster. 160MHz however was stable …

Hardware-wise, that's a nice Win98 setup. How loud is it? Does that ISA sound card work with DOS games? Have you thought about getting rid of the yellowing somehow?

Always nice to find a use for your old daily driver. I'd add a creative sound card. EAX is one of XP's big selling points, SBLive! upto the PCI X-Fi's will work in XP

STX: The Avance Logic ISA Sound Card works with DOS games at A220 I7/I5 D1 T5/T6. Emulates a Sound Blaster 16 or Sound Blaster Pro II maybe and a AdLib. The yellowing has its value. Also STX, thanks for the nice Windows 98 Setup I have.

The Audigy would be a very good card for a XP build. Quality may/may not change but If any of your games support EAX 4 or earlier you'll get more realistic sound. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_Audio_Extensions

What all parts are you looking at re-using vs. replacing? Are you keeping just the case or do you want to re-use the motherboard as well? It would be helpful to know what model of motherboard you have as the XP2000+ had several variations.

There is no Socket A CPU that is "fast enough" for Core Duo comparison. From Athlon64, FX-62 (2,8GHz, dual core), is around Core 2 Duo E6600 performance mark (no OC).

Best you can hope for depending on the board is an Athlon XP 3200+ I believe, which is going to be in the ballpark of a bottom end 2.4ghz Pentium 4C (Northwood). As I have a spare Phenom II BE 365 3.44ghz. I'm thinking why not recycle what spares I have and make a reasonable XP rig. It is however a 125w CPU , not sure if the stock PSU will handle it. It's probable only a 350w.
